Fitness Year End Update

Activity app medals. My current streak.During the past year I have taken up a rudiment of daily exercise in order to stay more fit. As we get older it gets harder to keep our weight in a good range without some effort. That combined with a sitting job is asking for something to be done.

The hardest part is getting motivated to stick with something from day to day without finding excuses of being too tired or too lazy and so on and on to skip a day. For me Apple Watch has played a role of a huge motivator. If I miss a day I miss out on weekly, monthly and other “medals” that Activity app hands out.

Activity calendar. Exercise, activity, standing.Exercise log.And so I have been doing at least 30 minutes of exercise starting from the 1st of May without a fail and meeting my calorie daily goal every single day. For me I needed two things to be able to stick with it. First is getting calories burned with a path of least resistance — stationary cycling machine at home.

And to make those minutes fly by a game of HearthStone on iPad — TV doesn’t occupy the mind enough and minutes drag on. HearthStone makes the minutes fly by while you are thinking of the strategy for your next move against another human being on the other end.

Some statistics for the data that I have tracked — at first I wasn’t recording everything, but I’ve been trying to keep everything logged for the last 6 months or so:

Weight loss — from 176 lb to 165 lb at 5′ 11″:

Some other observations: Activity app is a killer feature of Apple Watch for me. I could easily give all other niceties up if I could track the fitness data with some smaller device like a thin bracelet or a ring in order for me to be able to wear my mechanical watches.

I also have just received a trainer designed for a real bicycle in order to make sure I’m working the right muscles as opposed to our current stationary bike in which one sits in an unnatural position. I haven’t had a chance to test it out yet. I plan to do it in the next couple of days.

Anna — One Year Old

Birthday girl. Our baby-girl is ONE year old! We love her so-so-so much! She brings so much joy into our lives. I am so happy that Anna Leah is a part of our family!

Mommy love. There is not much to say in terms of Anюta’s development. She is walking better — trying to run actually. She seems to understand more, but does not say much other than “mama”, although she might have said “mooo-mooo” a few times (the cow’s sound). She can also clap her hands if you ask her or if she sees somebody doing it.

Birthday dress, first doll.Anechka tries to climb onto things — Arosha’s bed, living room sofa, bedroom sofa, kid’s chair. Arosha’s bed is easy to get on, but she still have some difficulty getting off, although I’ve seen her do it a few times. The sofas are hit and miss. It’s funny that she starts to cry out of frustration when she can’t climb on, but the minute she does, she beams with pride and joy instantaneously.

Siblings.Anюta can play independently for a while, although in the last week or so she is very clingy. I think she is probably teething. She even ran a fever with no other symptoms for a few days. Аnюta has 3 teeth so far, and I can see number four breaking through.

She gets up 2-4 times a night and takes 1-2 naps during the day.

Birthday guests.I am still breastfeeding. Anna is not nearly as fond of the process as Arosha was. In fact, she seem to prefer bottle over my boob (I express milk to take to the playground sometimes), even when its contents are cold. I am planning to go on for a while, hopefully. She still does not eat that much solid food, especially now with the whole teething business. So I’d rather fill her up on human milk than on that of other mammals.

Misha and Sasha listening to Anna's grandfather's stories.Anюta loves holding my iPhone. I usually let her do it when changing diaper or getting her things ready for bed. Yesterday she put the phone to her ear and started to make sounds. That was so funny. She did it again twice already.

Blowing the candle out for Anюta.Arosha is getting used to going to school. If last week he was crying at home before going, this week started tear-free. He keeps saying that he is sad and that he wishes the parents were allowed in, but at the same time he admits that school is not bad and that he likes being there. I think we are very lucky that his friend Rachel got into the same class. It made the transition much easier than it could have been if this was not the case.

Grilling on Daniel's birthday.Arosha is starting to learn English little by little. He still understands little I think, although if you ask him if he understand anything, his answer will be that he understands everything. I was surprised yesterday when he said a whole bunch of things in English (like simple commands such as sit down, lie down, some days of the week, some food items, etc). We bought Apple TV so that he can watch Sesame Street at home per his teacher’s recommendation. He was very reluctant at first, but now he is OK watching an episode from time to time.

Cheesequake flower bloom. We did a small celebration of Anechka’s birthday on Saturday. In the morning we went to Brooklyn Heights with Alex, who wanted to hang out with us, and took some nice family pictures. We then had a birthday lunch at a high-endish pizzeria. And in the evening we invited Danya’s parents and sister with her fiance and also Misha. I did not cook — we ordered food from local Russian cafe. It was a nice celebration, although Anechka was rather fussy and went to sleep an hour earlier than normally. She was asleep by the time for the cake, so Arosha blew out the birthday candle for her.

We went to the doctor for her one year well visit, and her stats are the following: weight is 19lb 6oz, height is 31.5 inches. Apparently she is long and lean.

Cheesequake grilling.Oh, and by the way, I wanted to write a few words about Danya’s birthday, which was a month ago, but never got around to it. He did not feel like celebrating much, so us and Danya’s parents went and had an impromptu barbeque at Cheesequake State Park in NJ. I bought coal and everything for burgers at our local Silver Star, but apparently left all burger patties in the store. Luckily, this problem was relatively easy to fix, although I felt quite embarrassed. All in all, it was a nice celebration as well, although I am not sure if the day felt special enough for Danya.

Arosha — 4 Years

Birthday balloons and a lightsaber.

Morning "almost" surprise.

Birthday ice-cream cake.

Battle.

Balloons.

Arosha with his lightsaber.

Making faces.

Kids.

Serious business.

Little Battles

Danya at four and a half month with his dad.I just wanted to write a few words about how we’re doing in the last week or so.

Anюta’s eczema is not going anywhere unfortunately. Some days she is better, some days she is worse. I am not sure if my diet helps any. Last Saturday I ate an egg, and on Sunday she had a horrible rush on her face. Coincidence? Who knows, but I am scared to try eggs again. Today I took some probiotics, which are not dairy free, and in the evening she was screaming for half an hour and scratching her face all the time. Coincidence? Probably, but no dairy for me in the near future.

I am at my wits end with this thing, but what I am realizing is that this thing will not magically go away. At least I know that I am doing whatever I can to help her.

In the meantime, I’ve lost 3 pounds in the last two weeks. I am hungry, sometimes more, sometimes less, pretty much all the time. And how I miss my rye bread and butter! During the last few months I was finishing a package of butter (250 grams) every single week, and now even though I try to compensate with olive and coconut oils, it’s just not the same. I weight 158 lbs right now by the way, which is much better than what I had with Arosha at 6.5 months postpartum.

Alёna.On another note — my carpal tunnel syndrome has completely gone away. Took awhile, but luckily I am back to normal. No more night sweats either.

I have to confess that I absolutely hate cloth diapering at this point. The thing is that it takes so much effort on my part, and her diaper area is still red most of the time. And believe me, I’ve done stripping (by hand too!), and use things that are supposed to get rid of ammonia and mineral deposits, and I change her diaper every 2-3 hours around the clock, and I give her A LOT of diaper free time. In fact, in the last week or so, during the day she only has her diaper on while napping or when we’re out. I have so many poopy and wet towels to wash every day, but it beats her screaming in pain when I touch her diaper area. I am afraid to try disposables again since they gave her even worse allergic reaction.

On the bright note — Anюtka recognizes her name. We realized it a week or more ago. She also is mastering crawling. She can move kind of sideways, but very slowly and can’t always control where she is going.

Anюtka and her red face. She is in general a very happy and easygoing baby. Unless stupid eczema is really bothering her.

I give her some solid foods to try. I follow baby led weaning approach — no purees. My friend Volha sent me a BLW book with recipes — I think I’ll try some of those. I am eating super healthy anyhow (lots of baked vegetables and poached chicken and quinoa and such), so giving her some of the food I cook for us comes naturally. She enjoys trying things and so far I think her favorites are zucchini and chicken. She gagged a few times in the beginning, but seems to be doing better and better with each try.

Oh, and I think Anюta is starting to look more and more like Danya. A lot of people commented that she looks like him, so we looked up some of his old pictures, and I think the resemblance is obvious! I see both of us in Arosha (but I think he looks more like me), it will be interesting to see how she’ll turn up.

Anna — 2 Months

Annushka. 10 weeks. Tummy time.I rarely have a chance to even turn on computer nowadays, so I’ll be super brief.

Anyutka is doing very well. She started smiling and cooing a few weeks ago. She makes that funny sound resembling coughing, which is actually her way to laugh and show that she is happy. I find it oh so cute.

8 weeks. She discovered her hands and loves sucking on them when she happens to find them. She enjoys looking at pictures in books — she often smiles at them, and often her eyes get bigger and rounder if she finds something especially interesting. She also likes to stare at rattle toys and she enjoys her play-mat thingy.

Her sleep patterns have changed.

OK, it took me a while to get back to this post, so now I’m writing about a 10 week old Anechka.

6 weeks. So, her sleep patterns have changed. She sleeps much worse during day time, and worse during the night. In the last few nights she would wake up every two hours and then would not want to go to sleep for a while (up to two hours). She used to wake up twice during the night for feeding and then go back to sleep. It is pretty exhausting, but I know that everything with babies this young is temporary. So it’s a stage. Maybe she is growing fast. Maybe she learned something new. Maybe something physical is bothering her — tummy, teeth… I don’t know. There is no way to tell. I just try to be gentle and patient with her. And honestly, every day I think how lucky we are to have her, to hold her, to watch her grow.

Smile. We go for walks every day — usually we’re out for 2.5-3 hours. If the weather permits and I can feed her outside, we go for longer walks, but it’s already December, so days like that are rare.

She’s getting better with her head control. I think she enjoys tummy time — not on the floor, but on my legs or on boppy pillow.

Anechka also enjoys her bath time. We do it daily, just before bed, and she swims in the large bathtub for 15-20 minutes. Aroshka loves bathing with her, but I don’t let him do it every day because it makes things more complicated for me in terms of making sure no-one gets injured or cold.

Happy. 10 weeks.A lot of people tell us that Anechka and Arosha look very similar. But to me they look quite different. Yes, you can tell that they’re siblings, but to my eyes there are a lot of things that are distinct about each one of them. I guess it’ll be easier to see when she gets older.

P.S. Annushka was 24 inches long and weighted 11lb and 8oz on her 2 months check-up visit.

Annushka’s First Five Days

Annushka. 4 days old.Only five days have passed since Anechka’s birth, yet so many things have already happened. First of all we’re doing a lot better than we did with Arosha since we just know everything by now and are not easily scared anymore. She also appears to be a much calmer baby. She eats, she sleeps with really small doses of crying.

Tiny foot.Alena is breast feeding exclusively and is doing it on demand as opposed to our previous time when she had to wake Arosha up every 2 hours to feed him. Anya is doing pretty well with it at this point, although she still has a lot to learn about eating. The reason for not having to do the scheduled feeding is the lack of apparent jaundice. It is still there, but it appears to be much milder than what Arosha had. Also she has no tongue-tie so it’s easier for her to eat.

Accidental smile. 5 days old.Today we had our second doctor visit. At birth she was 7lb 10oz. On Monday doctor visit she was at 6lb 13oz. Today she is at 7lb 6oz which is great. Doctor also said that she is not as yellow, which is also great. We did do the blood test to make sure it’s going down and should get results later today. She regularly has wet diapers and I think the count for today (since midnight) is 7. She seems to prefer to poop once a day, but in large volumes — sorry for so much details.

Curiosity.Today she slept for five hours straight during the night. Arosha still sleeps at grandparents although he comes to visit every day. Alena went for a walk with both of them today. It took her nearly a month to be brave enough with Arosha. Also her umbilical cord fell off today — much quicker than it took with Arosha.

Sleeping. And in the end I want to say that I’m still not settled on what form of the name to use, but I think Alena did. Not all of the forms transliterate well, but here are some: Anyuta — Alena’s favorite, Annushka, Anechka, Anya, Anna — too official. I keep trying all of them, but not sure which one works the best for me. Anya, Anechka, Anyuta.

Green Tea, Aroshka, Books, TV

Arosha on his car.I think about writing something about everyday things quite often, but keep putting it off. I guess if there was something grand to talk about, it’ll be easy to come up with the words, but my life at this point is pretty ordinary. And you know what, this is a good thing!

Nonetheless, here are some things I want to jot down.

Green Tea and Milk

Japanese green tea. When we were in Japan I realized that I am quite in love with green tea. I drank it in huge quantities there, and ever since returning home I consume about one and a half liters (or more) of this fabulous drink per day. I used to drink all my teas with milk (yes, ALL gazillion billion kinds of them) because to me they tasted too watery and flavorless without dairy. Japan changed this, and I am quite happy about this development. I went from consuming 1 gallon of milk per week to about 1/4 gallon — I even stopped buying milk for myself, and just drink from Aroshka’s carton of whole organic milk. Aroshka is not big on milk drinking by the way. He gets some in his morning kasha and with his evening tea, but that’s about it (we’re talking about cow’s milk, not mine).

Green tea from Japan.I also realized that I like Japanese green tea in particular. I drink other kinds of green tea as well (jasmine, rose, pear flavored ones are among my favorite), but when I ran out of the teas that we brought from Japan, I knew I had to get more of them. Luckily, you can get almost anything with the help of the Internet nowadays. I ordered three different kinds of green tea from Hibiki-an, and 8 days later a package from Kyoto has arrived. All I want to say for now is that two teas that I’ve opened — Organic Gyokuro and Organic Genmaicha Matcha-iri — are excellent. I might write a bit more about the teas and my favorite tea-maker (Danya’s New Year present) in a separate post.

What I am also happy about is that Danya likes Japanese green tea as well. He prefers to drink black tea with lemon and sugar, but he drinks green tea straight up, which in my mind is an additional bonus (he really has a sweet tooth when it comes to drinks).

Arosha’s Crib Escape

A few days ago Arosha has figured how to climb out of his crib. Luckily, we saw it on a baby monitor, and were able to stop him from completing the grand escape unsupervised. Here is a short video of his technique.

I was afraid that unless we do something, he might hurt himself while climbing out. Our friends told us that they just forbade their daughter from climbing out and she listened. I doubt that this approach would have worked with Aroshka (he is not mature enough and is pretty stubborn). Some people put some sort of tent on top of a crib, and it prevents toddlers form climbing out. I am not ruling out this option yet. And some people just transfer their children to a toddler bed. We decided to go this route since our crib is convertible, and so far the first two nights were normal. We had some issues with nap the first day (he did not want to fall asleep and kept climbing out of the bed), but today he napped happily for 3 hours.

Arosha's converted crib.To be honest, I am much more concerned about Arosha’s transition from nursing-to-sleep (or almost sleep) to NOT nursing-to-sleep. This has been on my mind for at least a few months now, but I am still not sure how to best approach the transition. He just loves to nurse, and I don’t know how to help him to learn to fall asleep by himself. I hope that in the next few months he will become less and less attached to nursing (and by the way, I believe that my milk still has a lot of great stuff in it), and I’ve decided to wean him around his second birthday (I don’t think that he well give it up by himself).

Books

Book in Kindle. After reading a very favorable review of “The Magicians” by Lev Grossman, I’ve decided that I would enjoy it too. It was OK, and I even bought the sequel, but somehow I can’t bring myself to read more than a few pages of this book at a time. I am not sure why Grossman’s magical world did not suck me in, but the fact remains that I am not drawn to reading, so it’ll probably take me another month or two to finish “The Magician King”.

TV

We’re re-watching Star Trek: Enterprise now. We watched it over 5 years ago for the first time. Sadly, my opinion about the show did not change — it’s not bad, but it does not come close to other Star Treks either (we did not watch the Original Series, so I am not talking about them here). This show is not too engaging or thought-provoking, but it is relaxing nonetheless. Too bad I know that they’ll screw some characters at the end (we’re at the 3rd season right now).

Star Trek: Enterprise via Netflix.Sometimes, when we have dinner early, we watch “How I Met Your Mother” or “The Big Bang Theory” on TV. Those shows are pretty funny, and I usually enjoy watching them. We might watch them on DVD when they finish filming them.

What I would really like to watch is “Mad Men” or “Game of Thrones”. We watched the first four seasons of the “Mad Men” last year, and I really loved this show. I think we’ll hold off from watching the rest of the show until it is fully finished. As for the “Game of Thrones”, we did not watch a single episode, but we heard a lot of good things about it, so I have pretty high expectations. Since at the moment only one season is out, we’ll hold off watching this one for a while as well.

My Weight

I’ve mentioned before, but I’ve lost some weight since our Japan trip. I used to be around 172-175 lbs in November, and now it’s 158-160. I love being on a skinnier side of my weight spectrum — the clothes look better, and I feel more confident about myself overall (especially when I have a touch of make up and freshly washed hair). Yay to loosing all the baby weight and then some! I think that the weight loss is a combined effect of green tea drinking, overall healthy eating, running after Aroshka and breastfeeding. And I started to sleep more in the last 5-6 months, which is great too.

I think about having another baby pretty often. Not that we’re planning to yet, but it seems like every other girl I know is expecting. The news about future babies make me excited, but a tad jealous at the same time. Is there ever a good time to have a baby? Is it every easy?

Arosha — 10 Months

Arosha rolling in the bed, playing peek-a-boo with his mommy.Arosha has turned 10 months today! Our big boy weighted 21lb 11oz and measured 31¼ inches at the doctor. He also had his blood taken to test for hemoglobin and lead — we’ll know the results in a few days. We dress Arosha in both 12 and 18 months clothes — the latter ones are still a bit too large, but some of the 12 months stuff is getting too snug.

On the bench in the park. Even though he can sit just fine by himself, he also has a big tendency to fall off things. The biggest thing that happened this months is that he learned a word — KRYA! He says it all the time now. I can’t get mama or papa out of him — only Krya, Ka, occasional Ko, Ga and Ba. But Krya definitely rules. It’s funny how kids will surprise you with little things — there is no way I would have guessed that he’ll start his verbal communication with the sound that the duck makes.

Five out of our six teeth are showing. He also started to recognize some other words. For example, he has a book about butterflies, a book about lambs, and a book about a bear (“Мишка Косолапый”). So every night Danya’s mom is asking him to show her each book, and more often that not he does it! He also definitely knows who papa is and who Shublik is (when I ask him where is papa or where is Shublik, he almost always looks at the correct person/cat). I am not sure if he knows mama, but oh well, he will at some point!

"I require this remote control. It must be checked for tastiness."He also stood unassisted — whole one time! Well, it was multiple times really, but on one occasion only (during our visit to Flushing Meadows park). I read somewhere that smaller, lighter babies have easier time balancing themselves — maybe there is some truth to it. He still LOVES to stand holding onto furniture though, as well as to cruise around using furniture for support. He also figured out how to open the doors of our bookshelves, and spends a lot of time doing it, as well as trying to chew on books (I don’t allow him to chew on books obviously, but sometimes he manages to start before I notice).

Sitting on papa's shoulders. He is still not very good at eating solids. There is definitely an improvement compared to the previous month, but breast milk is still his favorite. Can’t blame him I guess. As far as my breastfeeding plans go, I hope to be able to continue until Aroshka is at least 1 year old, and then have at least a morning and an evening feedings for hopefully another half year. We’ll see how it goes, but for now I am happy that my body is able to produce enough. I try to introduce some water as well, but he is not very interested in it.The thing is that he is not used to drinking from anything other than his mommy, so getting him to understand the concept of drinking from a sippy cup or a glass is a challenge of its own (although it seems that yesterday he figured out how to use a sippy cup with a straw).

Sometimes we cry. Especially when we visit the doctor for our check-ups.He also cut another 2 teeth this month — both upper lateral incisors. They are not fully out yet, but the tips could be seen really well. To Aroshka’s credit — he does not bite me while drinking milk (knock on wood). He does sometimes bite my clothes or any part of the body he can get to when he is hungry, but not the breast. I hope it will continue this way.

Backpack kid carrier. First ride.Being around Arosha is getting more and more fun! One of my favorite activities is playing a variety of peek-a-boo (which involves my hiding on the floor and his rolling around laughing in the crib) with him — both of us have so much fun! I love holding him, hugging him, kissing him, smelling his big blonde head. I love it when he smiles, and even more when he laughs. I love that when he needs comfort I am able to provide it.

Arosha in mama's lap. They say babies grow too fast — they do indeed. Sometimes it’s hard to imagine that he won’t be a little baby with dimples on his arms and chubby legs forever, and that there will be a time when he would not want to always be around us, that he will have his opinion, his hopes, his friends… Sometimes it seems that he will always be our little boy. But I know that he’ll become a man one day! So I am trying to enjoy this brief time of his babyhood as much as I can.

Happy Ten Months Birthday, Aroshka! We love you.

Doctor Visit

Aroshka is turning 4 months tomorrow and today we had our monthly checkup with our doctor. Everything is going well. Aroshka measured 27 inches and weighted in at 16lb and 10oz. Per baby-center calculator that places him in 90-95% height-wise and 50-75% weight-wise.

And here we are just before going to the doctor. Yes, I just woke up. No, Arosha never sleeps. Kidding. He actually woke up only 3 times this night. By our standards that’s pretty darn good. )

Two Month Anniversary

Aroshka in his awesome hat.Arosha is getting older. Today he has reached yet another milestone — two months. He had a full day today.

We had our monthly doctor visit. First of all we’re gaining weight quickly now. He clocked in at 12 pounds and 10 ounces. If at the end of the first month we were in 10-25% range with regards to our weight this time around we’re at 50-75% — a big improvement. Our height of 24¾ inches puts us at 95%, as the previous months.

Surprised. He also got his first round of vaccinations today. We’re hoping he’s not going to be feeling too bad from them. Doctor gave him 3 today and we need to get 3 more in 3 weeks.

After that he want for a walk with his mommy, had a couple of photo-shoots and even had a good day nap, which still is a rare thing. All in all it was a good day and our son is growing!

Am I smiling?

Weight

Chuchlya WeightI’ve been keeping a record of Shublik’s weight progress since his arrival at our house. I really just wanted to use an iPhone application called WeightBot, but since my weight stays constant it wasn’t fun.

So here we have the results for the first year. He went from 3 pounds at the end of March to 9 pounds at the end of December, thus tripling his size in these 9 months. We think he’s about done growing by now, but who knows?
