Hammock and Owls

Wooden owl.Several weeks ago we bought a hammock. We had perfect spacing between a pair of trees in our backyard to hang it on.

Our hammock area. However we knew that those trees were close to death when we moved in. These particular ashes were being killed by invasive beetles that have killed off pretty much all ash trees in the area.

Owls. We decided to put them up at a different height.Along with those ash trees we had another five trees that were either completely dead or on their last breaths so to speak. This area gets hit by strong storms from time to time, so we wanted to make sure that none of these trees fall on the house. We did hire a company and had them all cut down.

View from the deck. The crew of five people worked from 8am to 5pm. It cost us $3,200 to cut them all down and removed from our lot. A lot of money, but a very good deal considering the price of such work in the area.

Another angle. We asked to leave long stumps for where our hammock would hang. And in order to make it look presentable we ordered a pair of owls specially cut for us by a local artist. They were installed today.

Winter 2014

Winter's kingdom. This year’s winter is proving to be quite a bit more “wintery” than the last two. No surprise to us — Alёna’s mom is here after all. At this point I lost count of real nice snowstorms that we had. We’re getting another one tomorrow and apparently an even bigger one on Sunday.

Yesterday I decided to work from home in order to avoid a commute like the one I had during the previous snow storm — only some 4 hours to get home. That means that we had to undig or maybe thaw the car out in the morning today.

Our morning parking spot.Looks like snow melted some and then froze over again. The hardest part was trying to remove a solid block of ice that formed between one of the outside mirrors and the windows of the car. After the windows were cleaned I got to enjoy 4MATIC again — zero effort to get out from behind a solid ice wall formed by all the plow trucks.

The great thing is that this last snowstorm has made everything beautiful. I was driving to work and couldn’t help but think how great everything looks. All the trees were covered in snow. I haven’t noticed this before, so I don’t know what made this storm different. But, again, surroundings and trees in particular just look great now.

Snow 2010

Snow. And here is our mandatory snow storm photo. The storm is not nearly as bad as everyone predicted it would be, but I like the change of scenery. Not more than twice a year though, please.

I’m working from home and everyone from office is too. Alёna’s working from home as well. My mom is working from home. Shublik is definitely working from home. I think the schools are closed today also.

Autumn Colors

AutumnToday we had a mission. Drive out of the city to some place nice and find some autumn colors to capture on “film”. The trees in New York City just refuse to go yellow. Most of them are still green, some are ugly orange, nothing nice.

We woke up early (by weekend standards), picked up Ignat and drove all the way to Seven Lakes via Palisades Parkway — about 60 miles to the north of the city. Sadly for us the sun didn’t want to play our game — it was hiding behind the dark gray clouds. It’s upsetting, but we did the best we could with the available light and sky color.

I just looked through the pictures and there are definitely captures that makes the whole trip worth it. Not to mention the fact that the autumn does look beautiful up there.

I’ll post more pictures later as I have the time to go through them and make adjustments.
