Yesterday we came back from our third trip to Mountain Springs Lake Resort. It’s a beautiful place in Pocono Mountains that offers very cozy cabins, located on the lake and surround by forest, for rent. It’s not cheap, but is well worth it.

The cabin (#41) itself ended up costing us a little under $900 for 3 nights. There was a total of 6 of us — Alena, Arosha, Maruk, Alina, Emma and I. We split all the costs in half which made it much more affordable. The overall total expense for each family came out to $594.

I like this place so much because it is such a non-worry vacation where one can really relax. There is not much planning involved beside making a reservation for the cabin and getting there — and it’s only 100 miles away. This seems to be the only type of vacation where I don’t end up driving myself crazy by becoming a nervous wreck a day before.

We drove out at 12pm for 4pm check-in — even though we got there quite a bit earlier, they had no problem giving us the keys to our cabin. We picked this time specifically for it to coincide with Arosha’s day-time nap. And luckily for us Arosha did fall asleep soon after and slept for hour and half — pretty much all of our drive there.

We did all the shopping with Maruk on the first “morning” right after we got there. There is a number of huge supermarkets around it, Giant being the closest — a much more pleasant shopping experience than that of a shopping at any of the Brooklyn places.

We filled our shopping cart with all kinds of organic things to be grilled. We ended up with $225 worth of food and proceeded to eat pretty much all of it during our stay there.

Our daily dining regiment consisted of early light breakfast (yogurt and tea), hamburger brunch, shish-kebab lunch and skirt steak dinner. Ever meal included a number of side dishes such as salads, fried pineapples, grilled onions, seared collard greens, squash and pumpkins. One day we grilled salmon steaks and shrimp.

Everything was super-delicious and we are very grateful to Maruk for doing most of the grilling.

The lake itself was no more than 20 meters away from us. Kids enjoyed playing in the sand and the playground.

Arosha found one of his favorite objects on the playground — a юль (руль — steering wheel) and a slide which would propel him at freakishly high speed down — it was made of some very “slidy” plastic.

I slept rather well during the nights — we brought our own blanket and didn’t have to deal with typical hotel type multilayered deal that I always hate. Arosha slept in his portable bed which he likes quite a lot, but he kept waking up several times a night. Sadly he did the same thing at home this night, but hopefully it will pass soon.

In the evening after the kids would go to sleep we would sit around a fire and drink tea, hot-chocolate and eat some fire-toasted marshmallows. I myself stuck to tea, but Maruks loved their marshmallows big time.

It was a great getaway spent in a small circle of family and close friends. I enjoyed it a lot.

Poconos в середине осени оказался ничуть не хуже, чем в её начале. Яркие краски и характерный, с запахом мокрых преющих листьев октябрьский воздух, на мой взгляд составляют достойную конкуренцию спелой зелени и тёплому дыханию сентября.

В пятницу я выбежала с работы в 17:03, а уже около шести часов Даня забрал меня возле метро и мы отчалили в наше выходное путешествие. Прежде чем выехать из Бруклина, мы забрали Мишу, купили продукты в местном Shop Rite, ну и конечно заехали за Игнатом. В Mountain Springs Lake Resort мы добрались уже около 11 вечера, по пути очень неплохо подкрепившись в Olive Garden.

Всю субботу лил дождь, и днём было темно и мрачно. Тем не менее я расслабилась и получила удовольствие и от компании, и от домика, и от природы вокруг. Мы дружно играли в домино, чуть менее дружно в карты (Даня и Алина не большие любители Дурака), а вечером в шарады (a.k.a крокодил).

Я целый день что-нибудь жевала — то сушки, то сухарики, то тушёнку, то стейки (мы снова покупали skirt steak и было вкусно), то яблоки, то семечки. Тихий ужас! Днём мы устроили себе “тихий час” — вобщем, хорошо было!

Ко всеобщей радости в воскресенье распогодилось, и у нас появилась возможность прогуляться по лесочку и сделать осенние фотографии. Как же всё-таки там красиво! Небо было синее-синее с очень редкими облаками. Из деревьев мне больше всего понравились застенчиво-красные клёны.

Данька очень хотел найти какие-нибудь грибы, и все пристально всматривались в землю под ногами и шарили палками среди опавшей листвы. Лес нас не подвёл и поделился парочкой очень симпатичных, хотя и вряд ли сьедобных обьектов в шапках.

На одном дереве росли разные виды древесных грибов — по-моему, очень красиво.

Мойша вывел нас к поляне, где нашлись качели, баскетбольное кольцо и мячи. Ребята с удовольствием поиграли в баскетбол. Мне очень нравится осенняя фотография Дани, где он похож на игрушечного смешного лося.

Еще мы заприметили очень красивую гусеницу неторопливо переползающую дорогу. Интерсно, в кого она потом превратится? Меня удивило, что щетина её оказалась жесткой — примерно как щетка для обуви.

Мы прогулялись и вдоль озера, любуясь красочными пейзажами. Некоторые люди катались на лодках по озеру, но лично я не очень хотела бы к ним присоединиться.

Уехали домой мы с Даней, Игнатом и Мишей в восемь вечера, а Маруки оставались там еще на одну ночь. Жалко было уезжать. Эх, если бы это удовольствие стоило бы чуть-чуть дешевле (мы потратили за выходные по $150 на человека), то можно было бы ездить туда почаще.

Наша поездка в Pocono Mountains мне очень понравилась. Мы с Данькой раскатывали губы на тихий спокойный отдых в кругу друзей — и получили именно то, что хотели.

Всего нас поехало 12 человек и снимали мы два домика. В одном поселились Маруки с двумя парами родителей, а в другом мы с нашими родителями, Игнатом и Мойшей. Домики из кедра оказались просто замечательными — чистенькие, уютные, с камином, холодильником, плитой и всяческой кухонной утварью. Возле каждого домика под навесом имеется стол и несколько деревянных стульев; еще к каждому дому прилагается гриль, на котором можно жарить разные вкусности. Мне понравилось и то, что домики стояли в окружении деревьев — почти “в дикости”.

По ночам лес наполнялся разными звуками, но я до сих пор не уверенна кто их издавал — то ли лягушки, то ли цикады, то ли еще какие твари ползуче-летучие. Мы видели разную живность — тёмно-коричневых маленьких жабок, ярко-зелёного огромного кузнечика, крохотную изящную ящерку, странных кузнечико-бабочек, деловитых бурундучков, бесстрашных белок и даже парочку пугливо косящихся на нас оленей. Птиц же в лесу оказалось меньше, чем я ожидала, но время от времени они радовали нас своими песнями.

Курорт так же позаботился о том, чтобы гостям было чем занятся — совершенно бесплатно можно было покататься на лодке, поиграть в бадминтон казёнными ракетками, покататься на детских качелях, а за небольшую плату можно было взять в аренду катамаран или каяки. Еще на территории были натянуты сетки для тенниса и воллейбола, стояли столы для игры в пинг-понг (правда, до них надо было идти от нашего домика минут 20). На лодке мы с Даней так и не покатались — зато Мойша, Игнат и Данина мама воспользовались такой редкой возможностью.

Озеро было чистое, и вполне приятное для плавания. В воскресенье мы с Даней и его папой немного поплавали, но кроме нас никто больше на это не решился (Игнат поплескался немного, но так как с плаванием у него дела обстоят туго, составить нам компанию он не смог).

Мне также очень понравились наши прогулки по лесу — такое светлое, спокойное чувство охватывает от близости к природе…

В эту поездку выяснилось, что Данька-то у нас повар на все руки! Стейки, шашлыки и бургеры у него получились очень вкусные и сочные. Вообще я поняла, что залог хорошего стейка — это правильное мясо и огонь (а не плита дома). Данин папа купил skirt и flank steaks, которые мы посолили, поперчили и положили на гриль. Пожалуй, skirt steak вышел немного вкуснее, но flank steak составил ему достойную конкуренцию.

А ночью мы ходили смотреть на небо — звёзд было много, особенно если сравнивать с Нью-Йорком. Я вообще могу распознать очень мало созвездий — Большую да Малую Медведиц и Кассиопею, но это не мешает мне с любопытвом рассматривать небесную нетвердь раз за разом. Данин папа рассказал нам как найти полярную звезду и определить стороны света (я, со своим географическим критинизмом, всё равно запутаюсь, но послушать было интересно).

Вобщем, отдых удался на славу. Жалко было уезжать. Еще мы немного понервничали на обратном пути из-за “шалящих” тормозов нашего драндулета (не в обиду ему будет сказанно). Но тфу-тфу всё обошлось — все целы! Зато возникло сильное желание купить новую машину. На работу было идти очень грустно.

Our trip to Pocono Mountains exceeded my expectation and was pretty much perfect, not considering the minor incident of our car losing its braking ability. It was probably one of the most relaxing vacations we had. In fact, it was so good that all the people who went with us who I talked to today were in a state of minor depression from the fact that everyone had to go back to work.

On Friday we all left a bit earlier from work than usual and were on the road by about 7pm. Maruk picked up Ignat and Misha and they left a bit earlier. Surprisingly enough we didn’t get stuck in traffic and our trip there took a bit more than 2 hours — which is unheard of around NYC especially on a long weekend.

Since the latest time to check in was 9pm and we got there a bit after that I asked Maruk to get our keys, which he did. We decided not to stop for dinner on our way there since Misha and Ignat were hungry as well. It was already dark when we arrived and it was a bit confusing inside the resort itself, but we were greeted by 3 flash lights shining in the darkness.

We parked right in front of our door and I was totally impressed by the cabin itself. It was a house built out of cedar and the living room area had very high ceilings going all the way up to the roof. It had a full kitchen with everything you could wish for, including dishes, silverware, pots, kettles, and all kinds of other cooking tools. The living room had a nice fireplace built out of stone. And the house had 3 small, but very cozy separate bedrooms.

The cottage itself was located right in the middle of the woods. Even though we couldn’t see much around, the forest was singing with hundreds of voices of frogs and crickets. And the air was so fresh you knew you were far away from New York City. The setting was perfect for a perfect weekend.

First thing we did when we arrived was cooking a bunch of hot-dogs. Alena or mama made a light salad from fresh tomatoes and cucumbers. We all sat down around the large family table in the living room and had our little, but delicious dinner.

After a bit of talking and going over to Maruk’s house to say hello to his family everyone was ready to turn in for the day, since everyone was fresh off work and after a long drive.

Each room had windows which you could open by spinning a handle. I opened ours so we could get in some fresh forest air. There was a conveniently placed dimmer right above the bed. We got under a warm blanket, turned off the light and fell asleep soon after, listening to the sound of rain and singing forest.

Next morning we woke rather early, by our standards at least. I got out of bed, put on my flip-flops and went outside. Turns out Misha, Ignat and papa woke up much earlier and went out for a walk. Mama said that they were on their way back already, but they got lost somewhere around the lake.

Our cabin was pretty far away from other cabins and was surrounded by oaks and maples. Also I was surprised to discover that the lake was clearly visible and was no more then 100 meters away. There was a decent grill nearby and there was another big table outside under the covered porch.

Later on Misha discovered that they had all kinds of sporting equipment available for the guest without any fees. There were different balls for volleyball and basketball, badminton rackets, there was a volleyball net and we even had a boat assigned to our cabin.

Everything was just great.

The weekend flew by very quickly. People played a lot of badminton, we grilled a lot of steaks, burgers and shish-kebabs, did a lot of hiking around the forest and around the lake, swam a bit, played cards and enjoyed the company of good friends and family.

During the evenings we did a lot of star gazing and sitting in the beach chairs right near the water.

We celebrated my birthday on the Saturday with a big dinner and I got a bunch of cool presents.

We also took a lot of pictures, which I hope to post soon.

That’s pretty much it. Everything was great, the place was great, the company was great. I had a lot of fun and I loved our weekend get-away. We will definitely visit this place again. Maybe during the winter when everything is going to be covered in snow. And we’ll be able to sit and talk inside our cabin around the warm fireplace.
