Arosha enjoys playing with his Lego Duplo set from time to time. We even got him some more pieces to his original set. His favorite objects to build at the moment are towers and trees — which happen to look the same. The taller the tower the more exciting.

This particular building ended up being so long that he had to pull up a chair and get on top of it to complete it. Of course it is very hard to get Arosha to even look in my direction for a picture, as always.

Vacation time came unexpectedly fast as always. As the majority of people, I dislike packing, but at least I’ve become quite efficient with it over the years. It takes me 2-3 hours on average to pack bags for the three of us, and even though I usually overpack, the amount of unused stuff nowadays makes up a considerably smaller proportion of our overall luggage than it used to.

Anyhow, we packed, we made arrangements for Shublik, we went to bed early on Suturday and got up early on Sunday. The drive to the airport was quick — we do live very close to JFK after all. Checking in and going through the security lines was a pretty fast process too. We had a flight on JetBlue.

Aroshka was excited. The best thing about the airport as far as he is concerned are escalators. He kept telling us from the moment we set foot in terminal #5 that he wants to take a ride! He had to wait for all the necessary procedures to be finished (and that included breakfast), and then he just ran to the escalators and kept going down the escalator and up the stairs (there was no escalator up) over and over and over again. By my count he did it for about 20 times before it was time for us to go and board the plane.

What I love about JetBlue planes is more spacious leg room. In majority of airplanes my knees touch seat in a row ahead, and when people lean back, it actually hurts. I don’t have this issue while flying JetBlue. We had 5 seats next to each other — Aroshka, Danya and I were on one side of the isle, and Danya’s parents on the other. Arosha got a window seat. He first watched cartoons for about 10 minutes, but got quickly bored (maybe because they were in English and he does not understand it yet). We talked to him a lot, I read one of his favorite books for a little while, he watched cartoons on iPad for a little while (no more than 20 minutes I think). He ate potato chips snack — he likes chips, but we don’t buy them, so for him it was a rare treat. He did not sleep, but we kind of expected this. I was a little worried about him using the restroom on the plane — we have not had any accidents in months, but I was not sure if unfamiliar situation will affect him — but it turned out that I had nothing to worry about.

Upon our arrival to Liberia airport, we took a shuttle which drove us to Budget car rental. Danya made a few reservations with other places in advance, but at the airport he got a better price quote from the Budget representative, so we decided that there really is no point to pay extra. We rented a Toyota RAV4, and there was plenty of room for all 5 of us and all our luggage. Before the trip we bought an inexpensive car seat at Wallmart for Aroshka and brought it along. It makes me feel better to use our own car seat — not only it’s cleaner, but we also know its complete history of accidents.

The drive to our hotel was relatively short, around 20 minutes. Hilton Papagayo resort, where we stayed, is located in Guanacaste area. The bay where resort is placed is really beautiful. I did not tire of the view throughout our stay, but kept thinking of how nature can create such an amazing, breathtaking grace. There is an old tree at the center of the beach line, and due to the dry season it was absolutely naked. Each time I looked at it, it seemed as though its branches formed faces and bodies of some magical creatures.

We were pretty exhausted and starving. When we were checking in, in turned out that they only had rooms which required taking a shuttle to get to the main area where beach, restaurants and pools were located. It was slightly disappointing, but not a big deal, since this particular Hilton had a lot of small bungalows covering large territory and I think that majority of people have to take shuttles to move around. When we arrived to our rooms, it turned out that they were not interconnected as we have requested months in advance, but just next to each other.

Danya went to the front desk to see if it was possible to fix this, since having interconnected rooms was really convenient because of Aroshka. After initial reluctance of a lower level manager to do anything, the upper level manager fixed it — he told us that tomorrow a pair of interconnected rooms will be available, and that if we wish, we could move. And so we did. Our new rooms were also much closer to the center, which was an added bonus. We did not have to take a shuttle to get to the beach anymore. I have to say though that shuttles were driving around often and you could always request one. Moreover, Aroshka LOVED riding on shuttles, so pretty much each night we were taking a ride just for the fun of it.

We had a dinner at local buffet, and the food was pretty decent. They have a salad bar, and then everyone has to order the actual meal. It was functioning as a 100% buffet only at breakfasts. There were three other restaurants, but I find that the food was very similar in all of them. We got progressively more tired of it, but this usually happens to us in all-inclusive resorts. The only exception was Riu Palace hotel in Cancun — their food was far superior to other places we stayed in, and their restaurants were definitely high end. Aroshka ate pretty well. I felt slightly bad that he was eating french fries almost every day, but he ate a lot of fruits and vegetables too, so whatever.

We spent Monday at the resort. Woke up early, ate breakfast and headed to the beach. The sand on the beach was not yellow as we are used to, but grayish-black in color due to its volcanic origin. I think it also had a smaller grain and was lighter. There was also a lot of small pieces of corral on the beach, so I guess the beach itself has a mixture of volcanic-coral sand.

Aroshka loved the ocean. He spent around 3 hours running around, playing in the water, playing with sand and overall being happy. The sand area of the beach was pretty much deserted. Sometimes there were people going for a swim in the ocean, but they preferred to stay under umbrellas in the grass-covered area above the beach. Which worked perfectly for us — it was much easier to track Aroshka when there were no other people around.

I used a combination of zinc oxide sunscreen by Badger, which made Aroshka and I look like a pair of mime artists, and a more conventional spray which provides a chemical block. The combination of Badger and small-grain black sand was really something, plus it was hard to wash off!

After the beach we ate a lunch in one of the cafes, and went to get some rest. After a shower Aroshka was fast asleep. He did not require any song-singing or fairy-tale telling throughout the whole trip. The only thing that was needed is the cosiness of his crib. By the way, he could barely fit into the standard hotel crib. I fear that in a few months he will outgrow it completely.

We planned a trip to Santa Rosa National Park for Tuesday, but I’ll leave it for the next post.

Aroshka is 26 months old today.

We’ve made a lot of progress with а potty in the last few weeks. He’s been going on the potty at home when not wearing anything at the bottom for quite a while now, but somehow underpants threw him off and he kept peeing into them. A few weeks ago, however, we conquered this issue, so it was time to go diaper-free outside.

The first day it was just one accident after another, but on the second day, surprisingly, things have gotten much better. We still have to change outside at least ones every few days, but he mostly tells me when he needs to go, and I am really happy with our progress. He still sleeps in diapers, and I think it might be a while before he’ll be ready to take them off at night.

I also started giving him probiotics a few weeks ago, and they seem to help to regulate his digestion. We’ve made an appointment to see a specialist in regards to this (at some point he started doing #2 too often), but this is another thing which helped me not to be afraid to go outside without diapers.

Arosha is doing very well with his language development. His vocabulary is growing and syntaxis is getting more complex with each day. He only speaks and understands Russian for now, but I hope that by kindergarten he’ll have at least some rudimentary English as well. I try to speak English to him sometimes, but he does not like it and just plain asks me to stop. He also does not like watching cartoons in English, although when Danya and I watch morning news in English during breakfast, Aroshka does not protest.

At this stage in his development, his loves asking questions about the opposites (not sure how to better frame it). For example, I would say:
– Ароша, этот дядя очень хорошо стрижёт. (Arosha, this guy makes great haircuts).
– А кто плохо стрижёт? (And who makes bad haircuts?)

– Ароша, посмотри какой большой автобус! (Arosha, look how big this bus is!)
– А где маленький автобус? (And where is a small bus?)

He is still a quite adventurous eater. Mussels? Miso soup? Seaweed? Spicy carrots? Chili soup? No problem, mom! He especially likes going to restaurants, although usually he is too active to sit too long in one place, so I usually have to eat fast and then walk around with him.

He started waking up at least ones a night almost every night after having a cold a few weeks ago. I usually give him milk and tell him one short fairy-tail, and he goes right back to sleep. I just hope that it will stop at some point. Not that it’s really hard to do, but sometimes it takes me up to half an hour to fall back asleep, and when I have to get up twice, that’s an hour taken from my precious night rest.

Aroshka is also at a stage of a strong attachment to me. He always wants me to be close, and gets upset when we leave him even with his grandparents (we do it sometimes for half a day on Saturdays). We’re not planning to send him to a daycare for now, but if we did, I thing he would have a very hard time adjusting. I just hope that when he gets a little older, separating from me will be easier for him.

One of the things that Arosha really likes right now is hiding under our big bed comforter. I pretend that I look for him everywhere, and then eventually he shows up and I “find” him. Laughter always follows. He also loves to jump on our bed, but he wants me to jump with him (I pretend that I’m jumping though). He usually asks me to say the verse about “horses” (I add an extra verse about “кошки” (cats)):

Arosha also loves running around, preferably on grass, whenever we’re in the open space. He wants me to catch him, and if I’m not fast enough, he will slow down and even fall to improve my chances.

He really misses his friend Evelina. She left to visit her grandparents at the end of August and will not be back until the beginning of December. Aroshka asks about her often and tells me that we should invite her over when she comes back. He does not socialize with other children on playground, and if he does, he prefers older girls — up to 2 years older than him.

Arosha also got his first professional haircut this month. I already wrote about it, but just wanted to say again that to my surprise it was quite an enjoyable experience.

Aroshka also really likes his daddy’s iPad. We’ve downloaded a bunch of games for him. I don’t know if they have any educational value, but nowadays electronic devises like that are necessary evil. I limit his media time as much as possible, but we let him play a little almost every day. His favorite games include things like washing virtual dishes, or helping a toddler to go to the toilet, or doing virtual puzzles, or feeding monsters by picking up food from a refrigerator and then cooking it using different kitchen utensils. Arosha knows his colors pretty well. His favorite is definitely light green (салатовый). He loves light green clothes, light green potty, light green balloons, etc, etc. The other day we went to an eyeglass store to get my glasses fixed, and after looking at all the different frames and sunglasses, he picked a bright light green one and suggested that we buy it.

We went to Brooklyn botanical garden this Saturday, and Aroshka had his first encounter with cacti. Despite Danya and I telling him not to touch them, he did. Moreover, he picked the worst possible one to touch — there were no visible spines, but after he touched the cactus, we discovered a lot of micro-spines stuck in his fingers. Aroshka was not happy about this, but I think that it was a good lesson (he remembers his experience).

Overall Aroshka is a great kid. He is smart and funny and spirited. There are daily challenges of dealing with him of course. He pretends not to hear me when I ask him to do something that he does not want to do, and sometimes after repeating the same thing gazillion billion times to no effect I have to either threaten him with some action (if you would not stop playing with a water fountain, we’re going home!) or yell.

I try to control myself and not yell at him because I don’t think it’s effective, but sometimes I just can’t help it. To his credit, he usually tells me “Mama, don’t yell at me” (мама, не кричи на меня) and it almost instantly calms me down.

Arosha still very much likes when we read books with him. He became much more patient when it comes to longer stories. He definitely has his favorites, but I try to introduce new stories whenever he lets me. Right now among the stories that we read the most often are “Краденое солце” Чуковского, сказка “Как цыплята солнышко искали”, сказка о снегурочке, “Дракон Комодо” Д. Биссета, “Жил на свете слонёнок” Цыферова, сказки Сутеева о зайце и яблоке и о снеговике. Well, and many other ones!

This year we had a very small celebration for Arosha’s birthday — actually several small celebrations. On Saturday evening we went for a dinner to an Indian restaurant in Bay Ridge — he loves going to “eestauans”. Before getting into the car we took a couple of photographs which came out well.

I probably left a lot of things out of my previous post about the new things Arosha does, so I’ll add a couple more here.

By now he knows some colors pretty well — red, blue, green, yellow, pink and orange. I’ve been trying to get him to remember some, but he didn’t seem to show any progress. And then one day he just started naming them all properly.

The breastfeeding has completely stopped. So if you give a child enough time they will self-wean without any stress for the child or the mother. For us it happened in phases. First he stopped asking for it before he goes to sleep (day and night) and two or so weeks ago he just stopped asking for it in the morning.

He likes to play games with imaginary things. For example he always tries to feed me all kinds of vegetables (like onions) when I bathe him by extending his hand with fingers closed like he is holding something, even though the hand is empty. He tells me what he is giving me. He does these kinds of things often.

He also likes to say something that he knows is not right and looks at us with a smile waiting for us to correct him.

He was really afraid of the shower for most of his life, but lately he is turning it on himself and tries to get under it against his fear. Washing his head was always a big deal that used to involve a lot of crying, but now he will turn the shower on, close his eyes and get under it. He knows to wait for me to tell him that it’s OK to open his eyes when the shampoo is gone.

He loves drawing a net on his chest with iodine solution (our parents used to do this for us when we would get sick as kids) before going to sleep. Usually it’s his reward for washing his head with shampoo. I love seeing the anticipation on his face and the giggling when I start drawing with a q-tip.

He always talks about something. When we got into the car to go to the restaurant he kept commenting on the whole thing: “Мы едeм на папиной машине. В истаан (рестаран)! Се вместе!” His pronunciation is not great, but Alena and I can make out pretty much everything he says.

Or with colors the other day:
– Ароша, какого цвета эта буква?
– Синяя.
– Правильно. А какого цвета эта черепаха?
– Си… Ой, пепутал (перепутал)! Зиёная!

He likes playing on iPad. We bought him several interactive books where he has to perform somewhat complicated actions and I’m amazed with how quickly he figured it all out. For example there is a page where he has to feed the kids. The kids imagine a cupcake that they would like to eat which consists of 3 parts — a cup, cupcake itself and a topping like a cherry or a grape. And he has a bunch on ingredients of different colors that needs to pick the right ones from and build this cupcake. He does it very well.

He also likes playing with a bunch of puzzle boards that he has. There are shape, animal or number cutouts that he has to fill with correct pieces.

He also loves making us use the stairs most of the time. So we have to go down from the 7th floor and back up to the 7th floor only via the staircase. At least we keep repeating the number of the floor to him, so by now he has learned some numbers as well.

Also we prefer to never tell him false things and try to shield him from everything. For example he hates going to the doctor. But we prefer to tell him right from the start where we are going instead of hiding it from him up until we get to the office. This way he is slightly upset, but he knows that if we tell him that it’s not going to hurt — then it’s not going to hurt.

I can go on and on, but these are probably the most memorable things that he does that we don’t want to forget. Kids are a lot of work, but they sure are great!

Сегодня Арошке год и 9 месяцев. Я ничего не писала в прошлый раз (мы как раз были в Pocono Cabins), так что это записи о его достижениях за последние два месяца.

Где-то месяц назад Арошка научился прыгать! Еще он стал лучше ходить и бегать. У него до сих пор немного косолапая походка и мы даже ходили с этой проблемой к ортопеду. Он сказал, что особенности Арошкиной походки связанны, если я не ошибаюсь, с разворотом его тазобедренного сустава, и что эта проблема должна разрешится сама в течение нескольких лет. Он сказал, что никакие специальные упражнения, массаж, обувь и т.п. ему не нужны и не окажут никакого эффекта. Может быть, мы сходим еще к одному ортопеду для подтверждения диагноза.

Еще Арошка научился вылазить из своей кроватки, так что мы сняли одну из её боковых стенок. Теперь ему легко самостоятельно выходить из кровати, и соответственно в неё забираться. Мы боялись, что такой переход каким-то образом повлияет на качество его сна (особенно первоначально), но всё осталось по-старому. Мне кажется, что намного более сложным будет переход к засыпанию без груди.

Ароша всё лучше и лучше говорит. Он уже иногда составляет простые предложения. Например, “Аёша дёт гудять” (Ароша идёт гулять), или “Машу теть хОчу” (Хочу смотреть “Машу”), “Аёша атина зин аки” (Ароша на машине едет в магазин за очками). Его лексикон растёт, а произношение улучшается. Например, он научился говорить Аёша, деда, Генка (Даниелка, раньше было просто Ге), агушка (лягушка), сюшка (сушка), бака (собака), атинка (машинка), каси (краски), кой ночи (спокойной ночи), ну и многое многое другое. Он пытается повторить практически все слова, которые слышит.

Он до сих пор обожает мультфильмы про Машу и Медведя. Новые мультики он может смотреть 3-4 раза подряд в течение нескольких дней. Интереса к другим мультфильмам он пока не проявляет, ну а я его в этом особо и не поощряю.

На прошлых выходных он меня выручил. Даня спал, я была в туалете, Арошка игрался в зале. Я поняла (в самый неподнодящий момент), что туалетная бумага закончилась, и попросила Арошку мне её принести (он знает где она лежит, потому что практически каждый день вытаскивает её из шкафа и “прячется” на освобождённой таким образом полке). Арошка понял что я от него хочу, принёс мне бумагу, со словами “на, мама” вручил её (я открыла дверь по этому поводу), и ушел обратно в зал. Вот такой молодец.

Арошка очень любит играть в прятки. Прячется он обычно за штору в зале, на полку в шкафу, за дверь в спальне. Как правило при этом он приговаривает “я-уа”, что значит “потеряла” (мама Арошку). Он очень любит подсказывать, где он спрятался. Напрмер, стоя за шторкой в зале на мой вопрос, куда же пропал Арошка, он может сказать “ку-ня” (на кухне). Когда я пойду искать его на кухню, он тоже побежит на кухню чтобы понаблюдать за поисками. Ну а если я его очень долго не буду находить, то он подойдёт ко мне поближе и скажет “Вот он!”

Еще Арошка очень любит “ездить” на своём кораблике в магазин, и привозить мне оттуда разные продукты. У него уже неплохо развито воображене, и он просто сжимает ручку в кулачок, словно что-то держит, и даёт мне это что-то, одновременно сообщая название продукта (хума (хуммус), люк (лук), яба (яблоко), сир (сыр) и т.п.).

А еще Арошка просто обожает нюхать разные специи. Он ежедневно перенюхивает всё у нас на кухне, ну а открывание баночек со специями у бабушки с дедушкой дома является обязательной частью вечерней программы развлечений. Арошка запомнил названия многих приправ (карри, кумин, чеснок, корица, перец, итальянские травки, корица, гвоздика, лавровый лист, паприка, кориандр, базилик). Я не уверена, ориентируется он по запаху, по баночкам или по виду самих специй — наверное, по всем трём составляющим одновременно. Произношение у него, конечно, не идеальное, но часто можно понять (кумин, каи, безил, пеиц, гика, снёк и т.п.).

Лучшей подружкой Арошки по-прежнему является Даниэлка. Чем старше он становится, тем больше может с ней активно общатся. К сожаленяю (для нас), через 3 недели Даниэлку отдают в садик (она на 10 месяцев старше Арошки). Думаю, она там хорошо приживётся, так как она очень развитая, общительная, добрая девочка. Арошка без сомнения будет скучать, да и я если честно тоже.

Еще Арошка обожает сидеть за рулём. Даня иногда даёт ему порулить в нашей машине, и счастью нет предела. Еще мы каждый день ходим кататься на детской машинке (стоит 25 центов за небольшую “поездку”), которая стоит возле местной пиццерии. Рядом с машинкой есть еще и лошадка, так что Арошка катается и на ней тоже. Ну а после катания мы обязательно заглядываем в местный зоомагазин, где Ароша любуется рыбами, черепахами, зайцами, хомяками, попугаями, каким-то там дракончиком. К счастью, владелец магазина очень дружелюбный и не против наших частых визитов.

А вообще взрослеет Арошка очень быстро. Вот еще совсем недавно невозможно было ему вымыть голову без слёз. А теперь он понимает, что надо закрывать глаза, и хоть большого удовольствия от мытья головы он не получает, но и истерик больше не закатывает. Ну а еще Даня после данной процедуры рисует ему на груди йодную сеточку (он почему-то обожает когда ему рисуют сетку), и это его примиряет с неприятной частью купания (обычно мы моем Ароше голову раз в неделю).

Ест он по-настроению, но в принципе как и прежде пробует практически всё, что я предлагаю. Вот недавно я готовила довольно острое блюдо со свининой, картошкой и капустой, и боялась, что он не сможет это есть. Смог, да еще и с удовольствием! Он практически никогда не отказывается от рыбы, причём ест её в любом виде — и запеченную в духовке, и жаренную, и в супе, и консервированную, и даже просто солёную. Ест он рыбу, в основном лосося, несколько раз в неделю. Мы решили покупать более дорогую рыбу выловленную на Аляске (wild King Salmon), так как пользы от неё несомненно больше, чем от рыбы, выращенной на ферме (пока что я заказала 5 фунтов, и уже два раза из неё готовила).

Ну а закончить эту записть хочется признанием в любви. Мы очень очень рады, что у нас есть такой маленький, любознательный, смешной человечек, и очень очень его любим!

On Wednesday our son turned 18 months. That’s one and a half years already! Time sure flies. He is so big compared to how he used to be; or better yet, he is so big compared to how he used to NOT be. But who am I kidding — he is still so little, so close to the start line of his adventures, so in the beginning of the process of learning. Our little sunny boy.

Things are changing every day and it’s hard for me to keep track of what happened when.

He is starting to say some words consisting of two different syllables: Даня, кана (Оксана), Таня, домa, sorry.

He’s got total of 12 teeth.

He loves his friend Daniella and they play more and more with each other on the playground. Just the other day I asked him to show Daniella how he can climb up on a slide, and he took her hand, lead her to a slide and climbed it. He continues calling her “Ге-Ге” and when he is running around the playground, he keeps calling her name whenever he thinks she is not following. When we come to the playground and she is not there, Arosha usually gets upset and starts calling her name and looking for her (it takes him some time to come to terms that she is absent).

His new obsession is washing his hands, or rather playing with water in the sink. He says “ru” (руки=hands) and rubs his hands together as if washing them to let me know he’d like to “wash” his hands.

I am still breastfeeding, still 3 times a day. He actually asks for it more often, but I try to offer him something else (like juice) and try to distract him. He loves nursing so much, and I think we might have a difficult time weaning when the time comes.

We had a few days of snow at the end of January, and Aroshka got to play in it a bit. I am not sure how much he liked it, but now he definitely knows what it is. He calls it “se” (from “sneg”).

We also went to the Staten Island Zoo again. Aroshka was definitely interested in the trip as a whole, although he paid equal (if not greater) attention to stones and twigs and other little things. Animals were not as interesting to him as we have expected. I guess, he is still very young.

Aroshka has three favorite songs at the moment, and all of them are related to Christmas tree: Маленькой ёлочке холодно зимой, В лесу родилась ёлочка and Ёлочка-ёлка лесной аромат. We watch them on YouTube while he eats his dinner and he also asks me to sing them while he is nursing at bedtime.

We went to Ignat birthday’s party at the end of January, and he had a chance to play a little bit with their daughter Alisa. I made 3 short videos (15-45 seconds each) and they are among his favorite at the moment. He says “Eu-Eu” (that’s Alisa in his language) and points at my phone multiple times a day (I do let him watch some self-made videos from my phone 1-3 times a day).

Aroshka also LOVES to pretend that he is talking on the phone. He would put some object (a toy, a cup, a book, an actual phone, his empty hand, etc) to his ear and say “Yo-yo” (алё-алё). Then he would hand me the object and say “pa-pa”, meaning that papa is on the phone and he would like to talk to me. He wants me to pretend that I speak to Danya, and he listens very attentively to my “dialogue”.

We’ll be going for some immunization in a week, so I’ll post an update with Aroshka’s weight and height later on. He seem to be pretty tall for his age.

One of his new favorite words is “сям” (сам=myself). Every time he wants to do something without my help, like climbing up and down the stairs, drinking tea from a cup, sliding down from the high slide on the playground, he keeps saying “syam” “syam” “syam”. It’s the cutest thing!

We haven’t posted any Arosha videos in a while. So here are 2 brand new ones from yesterday filmed by Alena.

Here Arosha is playing with IKEA net for toy storage. He finds it hilarious when Alena pushes this thing over to him. Got to watch it with sound to hear all the laughing.

Сегодня Арошке исполнилось 15 месяцев. Я не была уверена, писать ли очередной месячный пост, но Даня сказал, что они ему очень нравятся. Ну что ж, подведём итоги.

Арошка растёт и умнеет прямо на глазах. Он очень много понимает из того, что мы говорим, и пытается сказать всё больше слов (например, суп (сю) или шесть (сесть), включай (чай), сыр (сир), виноград (га)). Иногда он очень забавно говорит “ку-ку” когда играет с нами в прятки.

Как я уже писала, лучшая подружка Арошки на площадке — это Даниэлка. Он её любит и единственную из всех детей называет по имени — вернее, он называет её Ги (так же, как и дедушку), но на его языке это значит Даниэла. Когда утром я спрашиваю его, кто ждёт нас на улице, он всегда отвечает — Ги. На площаке, когда он уходит от неё, а она не следует, он оборачивается и кричит “Ги! Ги!” (не всегда, конечно, но достаточно часто).

Арошка просто обожает свою бабушку — когда она приходит с работы, он практически не отходит от неё ни на шаг. Вчера, например, когда мы сидели на диване, Арошка притащил бабуле для прочтения книжку. Т. Оксана начала её читать, а я предложила продолжить, чтобы она могла поужинать. Арошке такой разворот событий не понравился, он забрал у меня из рук книжку и вручил её бабушке. Кстати, Арошка ночевал у бабушки и дедушки на прошлой неделе (т. Оксана укладывала его спать и сама кормила по пробуждении), и всё прошло довольно-таки гладко. Надеюсь, когда мы уедем через 1.5 недели он не будет сильно скучать. Дедушку Ароша тоже любит и довольно часто вспоминает в течение дня.

Арошка хорошо распознает знакомых ему людей, а так же себя на фотографиях. Себя он называет “Аи”. Мне очень нравится, когда в песенке про Буратино он всегда отвечает на вопрос “Скажите, как его зовут?” (ответ: Аи).

Еще Арошка недавно научился раскручивать юлу. У него пока это не очень ловко получается, но тем не менее.

Еще у него вылез 7-й зуб (снизу слева). Во время процесса прорезания у него жутким образом текли слюни и сопли (слюнявчик промокал наскзвозь минут за 30-40). Как только зуб показался и слюней, и соплей стало значительно меньше. Еще, как я писала, у него откололся кусочек верхнего переднего зуба. Не знаю где и как это произошло. Думаю, что большого вреда зубу не было и надеюсь, что он ему прослужит нужное количество лет.

Сегодня Арошка впервые ел банан, самостоятельно откусывая от него кусочки (до этого я всегда отрывала кусочки руками и клала ему в рот). Растёт наш орёл!

Арошка ест практически всё, что я готовлю, хотя иногда он может оказаться от блюда, которое с удовольствием ел в предыдущий день. Он до сих пор очень любит хумус, чернику и авокадо. Еще он больше стал пить воды, и практически перестал её выплёвывать (раньше после “питья” часто приходилось менять одежду). Он до сих пор очень любит грудное молоко, и я кормлю его грудью минимум 4 раза в день. Иногда я слышу комментарии о том, что, может, пора бы и прекратить, но мне кажется, что Арошка еще не готов к отлучению от груди. Из того, что я читала, материнское молоко и в этом возрасте до сих пор явлается хорошим источником витаминов, минералов, белков, жиров, антител, а сам процесс вскармливания помогает эмоциональному развитию малыша и явлается очень хорошим средством успокоения ребёнка когда ему плохо или он болеет. Вобщем, я стараюсь не обращать внимания на негативный фидбэк — каждому своё, а что лучше для нас с Арошкой решать нам самим.

А вообще интересно, что на площадке Арошка просто обожает собирать палочки, камушки, жёлуди, копаться в земле, собирать листики и цветы клевера. Это занятие ему интереснее всех игрушек, хотя кататься на чужих машинах он тоже очень любит. В целом мне кажется, что он очень общительный мальчик (он любит компанию, а палочки, камушки и листочки обязательно разносит окружающим нас няням).

Вчера Арошке исполнилось 14 месяцев. Вот и еще один месяц пролетел! На улице становится прохладнее, и возможно именно из-за этого мы с Арошкой простыли и уже пару дней сопливим. Я всё стараюсь как-то его закалять — всегда держать квартиру хорошо проветренной, не одевать дома носки, не одевать излишне тепло на улицу. Хочется верить, что от этого есть какой-то прок.

Арошка пополняет свой словарный запас, хотя пока что он в основном произносит только первые слоги слов: “пу” (пульт), “га” (глаз), “па” (палочка), “ка” (камень), “кру” (крутится), “га” (горячий), ну и конечно же любимые “ху” (хумус) и “гу” (грудь). Как я уже писала, он начал говорить “мама”, чему я очень рада.

Он так же всё больше и больше понимает нашу речь. Например, на вопрос вопрос “Кто ждёт нас дома?” он практически всегда завывает “ау”, что в переводе на язык взрослых обозначает Шублика. Когда мы говорим Арошке, что чего-то больше нет (например, чая в кружке), он делает смешной звук “у” и разводит ручками. Он любит выходить в общий коридор когда я выношу мусор, поэтому стоит мне только упомянуть о данной процедуре, Арошка сразу же бежит к входной двери и ждёт когда же я её открою.

Арошка обожает вентиляторы в целом, а те, что находятся в нашей прачечной, в частности. Каждый раз как мы идём на улицу или домой, он бежит к прачечной, делает круговые движения руками, говорит “кру” и дует. Мне так нравится всё это действо!

Еще Арошка стал намного лучше ездить и в машине. Мы развернули его сиденье лицом вперёд, и это имело очень положительный эффект. Еще Даня практически всегда может отвлечь капризничающего Арошку разговорами — он рассказывает ему о светофорах, фонарях, машинах, дорожных знаках, и Ароша очень внимательно его слушает! Сегодня мы ездили в парк и яблочный сад в штате Нью Джерси и по дороге домой застряли в пробке. Время было уже позднее, и я думала, что без слёз дело не обойдётся. К моему сюрпризу и облегчению, Арошка очень спокойно и вдумчиво вникал в Данин монолог об окружающем нас мире.

Каждое утро по будням мы пару часов проводим на площадке напротив нашего дома. Там есть много разных деток, но больше всего Арошка общается, пожалуй, с Даниэлкой (ей исполнилось на этой неделе два года), Итаном (ему тоже недавно исполнилось 2), Джулианом (он на 3.5 месяца старше Арошки) и Витей (он на месяц старше Ароши).

Мне вообще нравятся все детки, но пару слов хочется сказать о Даниэлке. Гуляет она с няней Лидой, которая 25 лет проработала воспитателем в саду. Даниэлка много говорит, может с Лидиной помощью рассказать несколько стихотворений и спеть пару песенок, и вообще она очень милая и смешная. Она называет Арошку “Аёшкой” и “Аёнчиком”. Еще она придумала фразу “Аёшка-Моркошка”, и на вопрос “Кто Арошка?” любит ответить “обезьянка” (потому что её дома тоже называют обезьянкой).

Арошка пока что практически не общается с ней вербально, но он явно обращает внимание на то, что делают окружающие его дети. Например, он как Даниэлка ложится животом на качели для более взрослых деток, и после того, как Лида раскрутила её на этих же качелях, Ароша стал наматывать круги подражая этому действу. Даниэлка обожает спросить “Где Аёшка?” и если он уходит исследовать другую часть площадки, она часто идёт туда же.

Еще Арошка тьфу-тьфу-тьфу стал получше спать. Как я писала, мы с Даней перебрались на ночь в маленькую комнату, и это имело очень заметный эффект. Последние три ночи Ароша не просыпался ночью ни разу. Не знаю как быстро эта традиция закрепится, но начало положено, господа присяжные заседатели!

С очередным маленьким Днём Рождения тебя, наш сыночек! Мы тебя очень ЛЮ!

Арошке уже 13 месяцев! Каждый раз когда я смотрю на него, то удивляюсь, как же сильно он подрос с прошлого августа!

В этом месяце Арошке накладывали швы на разбитый лоб. Даня писал про наши мытарства в больнице, могу добавить только то, что снимал швы д. Боря. Я волновалась о том как удержать крутящегося и плачущего ребёнка (волнения добавляло то, что швы были близко к глазу), но всё прошло довольно гладко и заняло не больше двух минут. Меня неприятно удивило, что наша педиатр направила нас для снятия швов обратно в Emergency Room, и я подумываю о новом враче.

Август в этом году выдался довольно-таки дождливым. Последние пару дней мелкий дождик накрапывает практически не переставая, но мы с Арошкой всё равно ходим гулять. Он просто обожает шлёпать по лужам, поэтому я заказала для него резиновые сапожки.

Арошкины любимые слова — это “дай”, “папа” и “мяу”. Он знает много звуков животных (в этом месяце коолекция пополнилась рыбкой (буль), совой (у-у), тигром (ррррр), голубями (что-то неразборчивое)), а так же он топает ногами на мишку (из-за стишка про косолапого мишку, который делает ногой “топ”) и пытается подпрыгивать на зайчика (зайчик прыг-скок).

Еще он очень впечатлился большой люстрой-вентилятором в доме Арсена и Лены, и может показать рукой как он крутится. Так же мы каждое утро смотрим как один мужчина играет в баскетбол на площадке, и Арошка имитирует удары рукой по мячу если попросить его показать “как дядя играет мячиком”. Когда Арошка видит где-нибудь собак (на улице, в книжке, по телевизору), он обязательно говорит “а-а”, а когда он слышит слово машина или видит машины, то часто имитирует звук двигателя (“брррр”).

Еще мне кажется, что он иногда пытается сказать слово грудь (у него выходит что-то типа “гру”). Для него это слово связано с кормлением и молоком (наверное, я слишком часто упоминала грудь при кормлении). Еще иногда Арошка приносит мне подушку для кормления когда он хочет молока.

Еще он научился говорить слово “hi”, но не всегда здоровается когда я его прошу. “Bye-bye” и махание ручкой мы освоили уже давно, причём он так же понимает что русское “пока” — это тоже “bye-bye”. Вика и Серёжа подарили Арошке на День Рождения “Alphabet Train”, который при выключении всегда говорит “бай-бай”. Арошка в обязательно порядке отвечает поезду (а так же любым другим игрушкам, которые с ним прощаются). Еще Ароша говорит слово “ба-ба”, но использует его не только для идентификации своей любимой бабули.

Арошка по-прежнему довольно неуклюжий и часто падает при ходьбе. Я как-то стала больше волноваться что он может пораниться. Даня обклеил мягкой штукой острые углы на батареях и секции, но всё равно вокруг много вещей, о которые можно ударится (как дома, так и на улице). Я просто стараюсь гнать от себя всякие дурные мысли и жду времени когда он станет более устойчивым.

По ночам Ароша до сих пор просыпается. Меня бы это не сильно напрягало если бы не наша надвигающаяся поездка в Японию, когда неделю об Ароше будут заботится его бабушка и дедушка. Я планировала начать сокращать ночные кормления с сентября, но после страданий со шрамом я не хотела сразу обрушивать на ребёнка новый стресс.

Спит он днём, кстати, уже стабильно один раз, что меня более чем устраивает.

А вообще он такой забавный и такой хороший! Я очень рада, что он у нас есть. Думаю, Ароша тоже этому рад.

В понедельник нашему чудесному маленькому человечку исполнился годик! Он так подрос, и так многому научился за это время. Я смотрю на его первые фотографии, и уже даже не верится, что он был таким крохотным и беспомощным. Я очень люблю нашего сыночка, и каждый день желаю ему быть здоровым, счастливым, любимым, умным, добрым, удачливым.

Год пролетел быстро, но вообще-то годы тянулись долго только в детстве. Первые недели, и даже месяцы было очень тяжело. Не знаю, как бы я справилась если бы не вся помощь, в первую очередь от бабушек. Я очень ждала материнства, но и энтенсивность физической нагрузки, и перепады в моём эмоциональном самочувствии застали меня врасплох.

Я любила Арошку еще до его рождения, но наша связь друг с другом стала даже прочнее за эти 12 месяцев. Элизабет Стоун очень верно охарактеризовала природу родительства: “Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.” Пока что моё сердце всегда при мне, но я знаю, что когда-нибудь наступит время расставания, и от этого мне немного грустно.

Больше всего за прошедший месяц Арошка работал над хождением. У него это получается уже очень неплохо! Он вообще перестал ползать и предпочитает везде передвигаться или на своих двоих, или верхом на маме, папе, бабушке, дедушке, ну или в крайнем случае на машинке одолженной у какого-нибудь малыша на детской площадке.

Ароша понимает всё больше и больше, а так же выучил пару новых слов (дай, тик-так (часики), и-а (ослик), ааа (котик)). Он по-прежнему не говорит ни мама, ни папа, хотя когда плачет или жалуется, то иногда начинает причитать ма-ма-ма-ма.

Мы много гуляем на улице, и любимое Арошкино развлечение — это баловаться с фонтанчиком для питья. Я всегда беру с собой смену одежды — в более прохладные дни приходится переодевать его мокрющие майку и шорты. Арошка любит когда вокруг есть другие малыши, а я уже поимённо знаю всех, кто приходит на нашу площадку.

Еще Арошка научился слазить с диванов и кроватей, чему я весьма рада. Конечно, я стараюсь не оставлять его без надзора в любом случае, но хотя бы уже не так страшно, когда он подползает к краю.

Еще я заказала для Арошки книги на русском языке в интернет-магазине lookomorie.com. У них очень большой выбор детских книг, что меня очень радует.

Еще мы продолжаем почти каждый день ходить в бассейн. Интересно, что в воде Арошка время от времени загребает ручками и болтает ножками. Насмотрелся что ли на плавающих взрослых? Мне нравится, что он не плачет даже когда водичка довольно прохладная.

Еще мы почти каждый день ходим в гости к дедушке и бабушке. Всё же как хорошо жить в одном доме!

Я по-прежнему кормлю Арошку грудью, и он по-прежнему просыпается пару раз за ночь. Я так же кормлю его с общего стола, и он предпочитает эту еду тому, что я готовлю для него индивидуально. Ест он понемножку, и мне кажется что до сих пор основным источником пищи остаётся моё молоко. Арошка любит мясо — никогда от него не отказывается. А еще меня удивило, когда бабушка кормила его луком (сладким, но тем не менее), и он его ел.

А сегодня мы ходили к врачу на так называемый well visit, где Арошку измерили и привили от гепатита А. Арошка подрос до следующих размеров: рост 32½ инча (82.55 см); вес 22¾ фунта (10.32 кг); окружность головы 19¼ инча (48.9 см). Если верить Babycenter, то Арошкин рост и окружность головы превышают эти показатели у 95% его сверстников, а вот по весу он попал в 25-50%. Вобщем, он как был, так и остался высоким и стройным.

Мы пока что не отмечали Арошкин первый юбилей — в понедельник все работают, а как-то хочется чтобы именинник присутствовал при приздновании. Отмечать поэтому будем на выходных — в эту субботу к нам придут друзья, а в следующую — родственники. Надеюсь, Арошке понравятся оба мероприятия.

А еще мне кажется, что Арошка похож и на меня, и на Даню одновременно. Когда я была беременной, мне почему-то хотелось, чтобы он получил мои глаза на Данином лице. Мне кажется, примерно так и вышло. Посмотрите на наши десткие фото!

Here’s are 3 shorts clips with Shublik being Shublik, that I promised to post earlier this week.

Here he’s playing with a birthday balloon. First couple of days he was terrified of it and would hide at a first sight of the balloon. He kept trying to attack the thread, the balloon would get pulled down, bounce back up and make a sound hitting the ceiling. He eventually got used to it and kept running around the apartment with a thread in his teeth. One day we found the balloon stuck under our bed. How? I don’t know.


Normal cats are usually pretty afraid of the vacuum cleaners. This one is always trying to attack ours. He doesn’t mind being vacuumed either.

And this is just Shublik running after his favorite toy — a feather, or rather what’s left of it. He finds it more fun to rip the feather out and run after a little red thing that’s left — I guess it’s more challenging that way. Feather is too big and too easy to catch.

The first one is Shublik trying to get to a piece of pineapple that is inside a clear box.

And this one is my favorite of the two. Towel stealing skills at work. He’s much better at this now and usually does this to every t-shirt he gets his eyes on.

Shublya really likes carrying our t-shirts around the apartment in his mouth and playing with them.

Just yesterday after work I wasn’t able to find my pink VS tank which I was wearing in the morning. Shublik stole it from the chair where it was left hanging, and hid it someplace (I still have no idea where).

Later that evening the shirt reappeared in the middle of the living room and happy Shublik was playing with it for a while.

He also like to hide under the old puffy jacket of mine. Danya says that he can put Shublya under it with a toy — and the little creature can entertain himself for almost an hour. Funny!

We took a bunch of pictures yesterday, but most of them are not sharp since it’s really hard to catch him sitting in one spot. As Alex said, his attention span doesn’t seem to last longer than a quarter of a second.

He slept the whole night in our bad with us, without making a single sound. Just moving around from time to time. In the morning he ate his breakfast and went back to meowing.

Now he fell asleep on the window in our office, next to me typing. Where-ever we go, he comes with us.
