Small Office Updates

My gray desk with a pair of 27" 5K monitors powered by top-specced 2018 MacBook Pro 15. Philips Hue strip behind the desk.I finally got around to redoing some of the pictures of my office. Some of the minor changes are the acquisition of Sonos One speaker and a couple of nice trinkets. I love my cacti collection. A set of pots with little plants and a set of glass ones. And then there is a steampunk mask we brought from Venice.

Twenty-one panel Nanoleaf arrow on the wall. The biggest change is the addition of a twenty one panel Nanoleaf setup on the wall. This thing is amazingly hard to photograph well because of its high level of brightness, but it really is beautiful in person. I have set to turn on automatically when I walked into the office along with my Hue light-strip behind the desk.

And the back wall is pretty much unchanged. And the last change is my monitor arm setup. So in my process I went from $700 arm to $200 arm to $30 arm. And the latter is one I settled one. It’s made by VIVO. All I wanted was to position my monitors in a perfect straight line next to each other and never touch them again. This cheap arm does just that.

The First Year Sagа

I'll start from the end. This is our little helper mowing the lawn just this past weekend. For our first anniversary of living in our own house I’ve decided to go pick out all home related pictures on my phone taken throughout this year. I heavily trimmed this collection and still have ended up with a massive number — 100 photos in total.

These photos tell a gradual story of us making this home ours. It starts out with how things were and how we progressed to making it what it is now. We’ve done a LOT of things and this collection show only certain aspects of our saga. Although even a number of later photos in this collection is already outdated.

Arosha always loved trampolines. None of his friends would really let him jump on them freely. Some were downright mean. So when we finally had a massive backyard we could not not buy one. A brand new SONY XBR-55X900F 55 inch TV mounted on the wall in our family room. At first I was trying to hire somebody to put these up. But then I ended up doing it myself. Our massive new sofa has arrived. We scoured a ton of furniture stores in Brooklyn and some others in CT. Most American stores just don't fit our tastes. Sadly going with online furniture purchases you never know what you're going to get. While this sectional looks great it turned out to be not very comfortable. Luckily this was easily remedied with a couple of throw pillows that can be used for support. Also some parts were miss-aligned, so I took it apart and reassembled it anew. Now it's close to perfect. WayFair refunded a lot of our money for this order because of all the issues. So in the end we got a stellar deal for a great sectional.Sadly going with online furniture purchases you never know what you’re going to get. We can write a novel about getting this table. It started with us ordering a dining room set from WayFair for over $4,000. It kept getting delivered only partially and with broken parts. The veneer turned out to be paper thin. We decided to go with WayFair after going through a multitude of stores and not finding anything we liked. We can write a novel about getting this table. And once we placed a WayFair order we went to IKEA and saw the above pictured set. We were disappointed because it looked great, the wood was solid, the leather chairs were really a good match for our whole overall look and the price was a fraction of WayFair's set. Another thing that we found was a box for beer bottle caps. It proclaims that the best beer is an open beer. On Wednesday we have a crew coming over that is going to remove six dead trees from our lot. These have been bothering us and we don’t want any of them falling on the house during some storm. So that’s going to be a nice thing to get done, although it also will be not cheap.

And thus I conclude a look at some parts of our first year saga of house ownership. It’s been a good year.

Home Office 2.0

Repainted office with Hue strip accent light. It’s only been 3 weeks or so since I published a post about my office and I already have a big update. When we purchased the house we felt that one of the two garages was too small to fit a car comfortably, so we were planning to move a wall by two feet to expand garage at the expense of office space in preparation for Ridgеfield winters.

Hue lights in red.Last week we have actually completed this project and we took this chance as an opportunity to repaint the whole room in colors that I wanted to do it in for a while — orange-teal. Three walls went orange and one accent wall is teal.

National Park posters on orange wall.I also took this opportunity to fix the cabling mess behind the desk — I’ve attached 12 port power strip made by Standing Desk behind the desk which made for a pretty good arrangement of wiring. And I also have finally installed Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance Light Strip that I have had since Amazon’s Prime Day.

Hue light strip in green. The hardest part was putting all the posters back up, since all the markings and nails that we put in for the first time were gone. But in the end I think the office came out very well. Extremely comfortable and cozy place to work from. I’m very happy with the final result.

Different angle view.

Home Office v0.9

My home office. 27" 5K screens on top of 96" long Mayline desk. This is my first “room” update for our new house. In the past three months we have made a lot of progress on settling in, so to speak.

My home office is the last room we’ve completed, but I’m going to start with it. One reason for that is the fact that I didn’t actually have a chance to have a separate office for a while now.

Closeup of the work space. As the kids arrived we freed up my previous office and turned it into a bedroom for kids. So my workspace lived in a corner of our living room for many years.

I’ll probably make a separate post on the technology part itself in more details later, but in short — the center-piece is a pair of 27″ 5K monitors powered by 2018 MacBook Pro.

A slightly earlier shot, but it depicts the actual color of the furniture better than the shots above. There is a another screen on the desk that is connected to my old Windows 7 PC, but it is a temporary thing that is assisting me in my full migration to macOS.

Monitors are placed on a pair of single monitor arms from UPLIFT. I went through a number of configurations before stopping on this one.

View from the door. The goal was to have better controls of the monitors by being able to angle and raise them as I wanted and move them away from me as far as I wanted. Dual monitor arm that I started with prevented me from pushing them far enough away.

There is a good amount of space between the table and the wall. So the connection point of my monitors is hanging in that space.

And all this is resting on a beautiful gray 96 inch long desk made by a company called Mayline.

Backwall. National park posters and casino chips.Underneath the back side of the desk there is a shelf kind of thing is hiding ALL the horde of the wires of this office. None of them are visible and there is nothing under the desk.

The back wall decoration is an idea that I’ve conceived years ago. I’ve acquired a large format book that had a lot of art done in vintage style depicting all of the national parks of United States. I loved the art and finally I have a place to display it.

Hidden mess of wires sitting on a shelf between the desk and the window.I’ve picked out some of the national parks that we have visited. We’re going to add two more frames to the bottom row in the near feature. On the side I have a place for my small old collection of casino chips.

The chair is Steelcase Gesture. I’m still getting used to it, and still is not sure if it was worth the investment. The sofa folds out into a queen size bed so this office can serve as a guest room. Which makes the computer powering the whole setup being a laptop convenient.

And to finish it all off there is an LED lamp connected to a wall light switch and a pair of simple curtains to cover the black holes of the windows in the later hours of the day.

Photo Prints

Decorated office.Today I finally remembered to bring in a real (non-iPhone) camera into the office and take some photographs of photographs. Yes. The end results of all my prints hanging on the walls.

Canvas prints. There are 20×30 canvas prints that I’ve done a while ago (at Costco). I keep thinking of adding one more cityscape to this collection. At this point my main candidate is Seattle Skyline.

Standouts. There are 8×12 standout prints (along with non mounted 8×12 prints on the desk) that add some nice color and were very easy to line up and hang because of their precise mounting holes on the back.

Black & white framed prints. And there are 16×20 black & white framed prints (the print itself is 8×12). These were a real pain to line up correctly because the hanging cord on the back is attached by hand which results in different, uneven lengths. But once done correctly the also do look great.

Tokyo Canvas Print

Canvas prints in my office. It’s been almost exactly a year since I’ve printed out my Empire State photograph on canvas to hang in my office. Today I picked up another print that I’ve been thinking of doing for quite some time — Tokyo.

Closer view. The first one I took from the Top of The Rock observation deck and the second one I took from the top of Roppongi Hills Tower. I think it came out really well and Costco1 did a really nice job again. I think these look really good hanging side by side. What city comes next?

A pair of canvas prints on the wall of my office.

  1. Paid $74.43 with tax included for 30×20 inch print. []

Office Update

Office desk decor.Last time I posted pictures of my office (quite a while ago) it looked really bland, since we just moved in back than. Over the time I added some color and a bunch of trinkets1 and accessories. Beside the landscape print-outs I also have a cool black & white photograph of Alena and Arosha on my desk — the “UFO” one from my film series.

  1. A binary clock that nobody can read, a sound activated blinking thing that annoys everyone and a remote controlled robot. []

Work, Work, Work

I'm in front of my monitors. There is only a bit more than a single day left in 2009. We aren’t really posting much since we’re mostly consumed by work. For me it’s one of the busiest times of the year and I barely have any free time.

My desk.I’m really looking forward towards the New Year celebration as it is the biggest family holiday for us.

My desk from the door to my office. There are a lot of companies that are switching offices lately and ours is not an exception. However when it’s downgrading for majority for us it was an opposite. We grew out of our old place and a new one is a huge upgrade that a lot of us were looking forward to for a long time.

My sweet dual monitor setup.I haven’t had a chance to post any photos of it, so here they are. It’s very nice when you have a work setup that you like. Things flow much more smoothly and more stuff get done.

August Heat

Alena's office.

View from the other window.

My Cubicle

Office Shelves

Office Shelves — BeforeWell, this past weekend we finally decided to do something that we haven’t gotten to in over a year that we’ve been living here — add some shelves to our office closet.

The thing is that the guy we bought the place from mean for this room to be a bedroom I guess, and he made the closet for hanging clothes. We, instead, piled up a bunch of our photo and computer bags in there, and then more then half of that space was wasted, because you can’t store anything on top of the bags.

We carefully measured the size of the shelves that we would need and went to a local hardware store — Office Shelves — AfterDoody Home Center. Now this place might not be as big as Home Depot or Lowes, but it’s by far the best hardware store I’ve been to. This wasn’t the first time experience either. Basically we just asked a guy working there where we could find the boards for the shelves. Not only did he help us find the boards, he cut them for us precisely to the right size. Go get someone to do that at Home Depot.

Went home, drilled some holes, installed the pins, the shelves, attached the moldings, done! Came out rather nice.

Futon

FutonToday we got a new addition to our apartment — a convertible futon bed for our office. There are many reasons why we wanted one, including the fact that now the friends that want to stay over do not need to sleep on the inflatable mattress. So, Таня, Lenchik, Eldar and anybody else, you can stay here any time you are in New York!

We’ve test driven the futon with Alena within the first 5 minutes of us taking ownership, and it passed with flying colors. teeth Also this room seems like a cool place to hang out with friends now, since everyone has a place to sit comfortably and in a closer proximity than in the living room. To sum it all up: we like! teeth
