Small Office Updates

My gray desk with a pair of 27" 5K monitors powered by top-specced 2018 MacBook Pro 15. Philips Hue strip behind the desk.I finally got around to redoing some of the pictures of my office. Some of the minor changes are the acquisition of Sonos One speaker and a couple of nice trinkets. I love my cacti collection. A set of pots with little plants and a set of glass ones. And then there is a steampunk mask we brought from Venice.

Twenty-one panel Nanoleaf arrow on the wall. The biggest change is the addition of a twenty one panel Nanoleaf setup on the wall. This thing is amazingly hard to photograph well because of its high level of brightness, but it really is beautiful in person. I have it set to turn on automatically when I walk into the office along with my Hue light-strip behind the desk.

And the back wall is pretty much unchanged. And the last change is my monitor arm setup. So in my process I went from $700 arm to $200 arm to $30 arm. And the latter is the one I settled on. It’s made by VIVO. All I wanted was to position my monitors in a perfect straight line next to each other and never touch them again. This cheap arm does just that.

Mac: First Impressions

MacBook ProIt’s now have been a couple of days since I’ve started playing with a Mac. There are both positives and negatives that I’ve run across. For me something new is always interesting, and considering that I’ve been using DOS, Linux and Windows for decades now — Mac OS I’ve only seen from a far.

I’ll start with specs of our machine — MacBook Pro.
  • 2.4GHz Intel Penryn Core 2 Duo
  • 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM — 2x1GB
  • 200GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
  • NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 256MB
  • 15-inch Glossy LED Widescreen Display
  • SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
  • Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS – U.S. English
  • Multi-touch Trackpad

Apple is a master of the eye-candy. Everything looks nice and clean with nifty animations all over the place. Continue Reading

MacBook Pro is Here

Fifth Avenue Apple StoreToday I’ve met up with Alёna after school near the local Apple store. I’ve got to give it to Apple — even the design of the store itself is nice.

Rubinary Blog on iPhoneNow this is going to be embarrassing — I touched the iPhone today, for the first time. teeth It is as nice as I thought it was. I was especially impressed with the keyboard. I was sure that you have to try to hit every letter multiple times to get it right. I was wrong. We typed in several sentences in English, and then several more in translit Russian. Not a single typo.

MacBook Pro BoxThen we proceeded to buy our first Mac. We went with a MacBook Pro with a glossy screen for $1,999. But with Alёna’s student ID we got it for $1,799 + tax. So far “I like”.

Oh yeah, when I tried to load our blog on iPhone, it crashed Safari. mrgreen
