Daily Walks

Arosha walking in his walk around thingy.Today was a super-hot day — totally felt like summer. I went for a walk with Aroshka and d. Borya, who told me that in the morning it was not too warm out. ) As a result, I dressed both Aroshka and myself up in winter jackets and hats. What a mistake! ) I took my jacket off right away, and undressed Aroshka after he woke up (I unzipped him when he was asleep, but was reluctant to disturb him any further since he is a very light sleeper).

While my mom was here, I developed a good habit of going for 2 hour walks with Aroshka. Danya’s mom was telling me ever since he was born that fresh air is very good for babies, but I lacked confidence and was scared to go just by myself. I only did it twice a week on average (and she was taking him for long walks on the weekends), and I tried to find good excuses to stay home when possible, but felt guilty for not going outside as a result. )

Lions on a little lion. The thing is that Aroshka has gotten much more manageable in the last few months. He used to wake up screaming every half hour when he was younger, and it took a lot of effort to calm him down and put him back to sleep. Now he stirs in his sleep from time to time, but usually rocking the stroller prevents him from fully waking. I do try to stay on quieter streets though since the noise seem to negatively affect the length of his naps.

Speaking of quieter streets… I am growing so really tired of how overcrowded Brooklyn is. We live in a 10 minute walk from the canal on Emmons street, but even by the water there is much more noise than I would like to. It seems that there is no escape from cars, concrete and buildings. I really long for more rural views! My hope is that we’ll buy a house eventually (probably, no sooner than I will return to work though) in a quiet suburban area. )

Arosha being a little bird. Check out the hair.I also wish that I had a friend with the baby of similar age nearby. It’ll be so great to go for walks together and to set play dates for our kids later on. Maybe I’ll get lucky and will meet some young mama one of those days. ) So far I see a lot of older women walking with the babies and toddlers — I guess, some of them are grandparents, and some are baby-sitters.

Aroshka is growing so fast! Danya already wrote that he gets on his knees and hands and rocks back and forth — and he is doing it with more and more confidence each day. I think he’ll crawl in a few weeks. We need to order a gate to separate our kitchen — we keep Shublik’s food and litter box out there, and I am sure Aroshka will be magnetized by both of these. )

Alёna getting ready for Arosha walk.He still can’t sit unassisted, but I am not worried — every baby develops at his own pace, and probably in a month or so Aroshka will get there. Our boy has very strong legs and hands, but it seems that his spine is still weak. I think one of the reasons for this might be that his torso is pretty long.

Arosha loves water! Every time we go to the bathroom, he starts smiling and acting all kinds of happy. Even washing his face and hands gets him very excited. ) I especially like when Danya and Arosha are bathing together — both of them radiate so much happiness that watching them is pure pleasure. ) Continue Reading

Daniel & Alena. Photography by Andrey Rybalka. Daniel & Alena. Photography by Andrey Rybalka.

Daniel and Alena in Central Park. Photography by Andrey Rybalka.

) Continue Reading

Aaron. Continue Reading

The Post-Birthday World

The Post-Birthday World by Lionel Shriver.Today was gray and rainy — not a very pleasant day I guess, although I can see a certain charm in it too. I was looking out of the office window often today to admire the pail watery clouds which were hiding the tops of Manhattan skyscrapers from me, to watch the very basic dance of rain streaks, to simply think about the special beauty of the fall.

On days like today classical music and Russian rock go especially well. My sister used to play October by Tchaikovsky — I think it captures my mood perfectly, and I always feel somewhat nostalgic when I hear the music. Tam-tam-tam-tam-tadada…

I am chewing on “The Post-Birthday World” by Lionel Shriver right now. Been at it for about a week now (subway rides naturally), and have only gotten through about a half of this novel (250 pages or so). I picked it up after seeing it on 2007 NY Times books list, and in a way it turned out to be a disappointment for me. The piece has its moments, but it’s not exiting or humorous enough for me. )

The story itself is about a girl, Irina McGovern, who is at the crossroads of a sort and needs to decide whether she wants to stay with her secure, but slightly boring boyfriend, or if she wants to leave him for more exciting, but far more unpredictable “cat-in-the-bag” celebrity snooker player. I got to give Lionel credit for quite an original construction of the novel — she plays a “what if” game with the reader and repeats each chapter twice depending on which road was taken. I intent to finish this work, but already look forward to something more captivating. )

The Lords of Discipline

Lords of Discipline. What a wonderful book. It has about everything — mystery, love, betrayal, loyalty, finding oneself… Will McLean, the storyteller, is a young Irish boy who reflects on his experiences during the 4 years of being a cadet at Carolina Military Institute.

Pat Conroy has a powerful writing style — he takes you in all the way and makes his characters so believable, that I cried on a subway last night when something bad happened to one of them. I will definitely read other Conroy’s novels.

I also wanted to add that it is not so easy to find really good books today since there is so much junk around. Just before “The Lords of Discipline” I read a detective novel written by a Russian couple — Anna and Sergei Litvinovy. I would never touch anything written by those two again — not unless there is a shortage of toilet paper in this country.

City of Thieves

City of ThievesI’m finishing up “City of Thieves” by David Benioff (took me 3 rides to/from work to get almost to the end of the novel). It’s an easy enjoyable read (Geoff, thanks a lot for recommending!), both funny and sad. I don’t want to write about the plot or to analyze the novel in a-la lessons of literature style, but let me just say that the story revolves around two young men (one Jewish, one Russian) who are sent by a high-up NKVD official to get a dozen of eggs in Leningrad under Nazi siege. The book sucks you in — I almost missed my subway stop on Monday. )

Continue Reading

IKEA Billy Bookcases

IKEA Billy bookcase for our office. As I wrote before we went to IKEA this weekend to get some stuff for our apartment. Out of all the stuff that we wanted we didn’t find anything, but one thing — IKEA Billy bookcase, even though even this item was marked as sold out.

To our surprise we were able to find the right color bookcase and the glass doors for it at their warehouse. So that’s what we bought. I assembled it the same very evening and Alёna moved some of our books and a whole bunch of trinkets into the bookcase.

It’s came out like a micro version of my parents’ bookcase that I wrote about a while ago. But even though it is much smaller it looks just as good, or so I think. teeth

Books and Bookcases

IKEA BILLY BookcaseA lot of things are happening, but we haven’t been writing much about it. My parents have moved into their new apartment almost 2 months ago. All this time they have been slowly finding and buying the furniture for their new home.

It’s been an exhausting, yet fun experience. Problems like these are my favorite kind of problems. At this point however they are very close to done.

The latest addition is the IKEA BILLY bookcase system. Huge thanks to Misha for helping us get all of it to Brooklyn. Without his help there is no way we would be able to get it. Long live the minivan… and its owner! teeth

My dad has brought a lot of books from Tashkent with him. All this time they’ve been hidden away or stacked Continue Reading
