American Dream — Part 2

Most of our backyard. In the previous post I stopped at us meeting with our agent, Laura, and seeing 5 houses in Redding and Ridgefield. Three of the houses were in a rather bad condition and needed a lot of work — that is something that we were not prepared to do at all.

Two out of those fives houses were in a pretty nice condition, but one was out of the range of the prices that we wanted to pay and we didn’t really give it a serious look. And the last house that we saw seemed to fit the bill. It looked pretty nice inside with very big bedrooms. We really liked it. So we made a “lowish” offer, the sellers came back and eventually we agreed upon a very decent price.

The next stage was a series of inspections. One thing that I didn’t really realize was the fact that vast majority of towns in America actually don’t get any utility services from the city beside electricity. No water, no sewage, no natural gas. Nothing. I heard that some people had private wells before, but I thought it was a fancy choice of those owners. Turns out it’s because there is no other option. American Dream

Our Connecticut house. It’s time to finally post an update and a reason for the long silence on the blog. It took us months and months of sweat, stress and hard work, but we have realized a long standing dream of ours — we have bought and moved into our very own house!

Now, in more details. We started seriously thinking about doing this at the end of last summer. We had many reasons why we wanted to change our living situation. We were really running out of space in our smallish junior 41, single bathroom apartment. Continue Reading

Parents’ Apartment

Living room view from the hallway. Note the entertainment unit with a 46 inch wide screen TV in it and 6 spot lights in the ceiling.I made the last post on the parents’ apartment a while ago. I wanted to take some pictures for a while now, but I held myself off so I could post photos of when everything was ready, or almost ready.

Different angle from the same spot. Super comfortable sofa which fits the whole family and a buffet in the corner. That moment finally came on Friday, June 13th, which coincided with our 13th anniversary in United States. The final touch was the installation of curtain rods and the handing of curtains themselves, which my parents ordered a month or so ago.

Living room with a piece of dining table visible. Note an over a 100 year old clock on the wall. It was given to my great grand parents as a gift on their wedding in 1906.There is also a matter of getting the frames for all the paintings they have, but that will not change the general feel of the rooms.

And a nice dining area. All the pictures have captions on them, so just mouse over the photo to see a small description.

Master bedroom. My mom will say that she did not yet have a chance to get a matching bed cover. The monster does not care however.I think the apartment came out really well and is super cozy. I would trade in a second. ) I also will take credit for a lot of it. ) I talked my parents into getting most of the stuff in the living room, including furniture, lights, rugs and even picking the wall colors.

My sister's bedroom. Yes, it really is pink. The bedroom furniture was picked out by my parents themselves, but I like it a lot also.

In conclusion I want to say that I’m very happy for my parents. It’s nice to finally have a nice place which came out so great.

Books and Bookcases

IKEA BILLY BookcaseA lot of things are happening, but we haven’t been writing much about it. My parents have moved into their new apartment almost 2 months ago. All this time they have been slowly finding and buying the furniture for their new home.

It’s been an exhausting, yet fun experience. Problems like these are my favorite kind of problems. At this point however they are very close to done.

The latest addition is the IKEA BILLY bookcase system. Huge thanks to Misha for helping us get all of it to Brooklyn. Without his help there is no way we would be able to get it. Long live the minivan… and its owner! teeth

My dad has brought a lot of books from Tashkent with him. All this time they’ve been hidden away or stacked Continue Reading

Home Renovations

Wiring DiagramEven though my parents own the apartment already they can’t move in yet. All of us decided that it would be a good idea to get certain things done before moving in — redo the surface of the floors, replace the moldings along the walls, paint the walls non-white color and install the lighting in the form of 6 spot lights in the living room. I however added 1 more task — wiring up the apartment properly for TV and Internet so we wouldn’t have to run the wires all over the place when they can be hidden inside the walls now. Happy Year

New Year in the HallwayThis year is almost over and New Year decorations are starting to appear all over the city. I think I’m ready to start getting into the holiday mood as well.

The year 2007 was a great year for us, as the one before. Many things happened, but probably the most important achievement of the year is the acquisition of our own apartment and the fact that our parents have finally took the same step. Yesterday they closed the deal on their own apartment in the same building as ours. A couple of weeks of minor fixes and we’re all hoping that they’ll be celebrating the New Year in their new home.

The lobby of our building is already full of decorations and it always fills me in with a kind of a warm feeling every time I come home. This is one of the main things that we need for complete happiness I think. The warms of the home. And luckily I have plenty of that.

Поздравлялки

Flowers

Continue Reading

It Really Sucks!

Dyson Vacuum CleanerI’ve just finished vacuuming our rugs and I must say that I was yet again really impressed by the fact that this vacuum cleaner really sucks.

This means two things — that I probably don’t do this as often as I should (as in “must help Alena more often”) and that I really recommend this vacuum cleaner to anybody who needs one. I don’t remember who recommended to get it to us, but extra “thanks” go out to them. Was it Eldar?

This is a Dyson DC14 Vacuum cleaner. We got it several years ago at a local PC Richard & Son store for a very good price because they kept screwing up over and over and sending us to different locations to grab one (after we already paid for it) until a manager of one store finally gave up and just gave us a more expensive model — they just didn’t have the cheap one we paid for in stock anywhere. shock mrgreen
