Dreadsteeds

DreadsteedYesterday night my warlock hit level 60. Maruk has one that is 65 and he pretty much gathered all the materials for the 2 of us to do our Dreadsteed quest.

Eldar and Alena helped us complete the last part tonight. Thanks to them gratz to both of us. mrgreen

Warrior and Warlock

Hahz, Undead WarlockIt’s time to confess. I have reactivated WoW again on December 2. That thing just keeps pulling me back in. Alena has reactivated her account as well.

We’ve been doing a lot of heroic instances with friends, something that we haven’t done before and I find those a lot of fun. They present a nice challenge and offer some upgrades in gear, even though very minimal.

I have also brought up The UGH site back up and we’ve got some activity there. We actually have our first Karazhan raid scheduled for tomorrow. I don’t know how it will go, or if everyone will show up, but it looks promising. It’s going to be great to run things again with good in game friends and Eldar.

Another fun thing for me is my warlock that I made, named Hahz. He is level 54 now and the play style is completely different from a tanking warrior. I’m enjoying it a lot. I’m planning to do some PvPing with him and he’s going to be my farming machine.

Greek Gyro And Pocker

Greek GyroYesterday was a fun day. Well, apart from the visit to the ophthalmologist in order to figure out what’s going on with Danya’s eye (the diagnosis is “floaters”). sad

So after the 2-hours visit to the doctor, we met with Ignat, and took a D train to get to the Greek Gyro place located in Downtown Brooklyn. Now, if you know Danya personally, you probably heard him talking about that place. mrgreen It could’ve been something like “the best gyro I ever had”, or “nobody can make the white sauce like those guys”, or “Ooo, I would so eat that gyro from Greeks now”, or… Continue Reading

Grim Day

R.I.P. Worc and VesnaThe sun is setting down already and it just stopped raining. The sky is covered by a thick blanket of dark gray clouds. The mood is grim.

Two days ago we did something I didn’t think we’d ever do. We delete all of our characters in WoW, including our main ones, that we played for years. But this way we have no way back to something that became so frustrating and un-fun. cry

Hopefully tomorrow will be a sunny day.

Epic Flying Mount

Epic Flying MountBack to the topic of Warcraft. During the 2nd half of March Dnevnoi Dozor crumbled and shattered into nothing. Everything and everyone started running in all possible directions, so there are only 3 members in the guild now: Alena, Maruk and me. We’re basically back to where we started. Eldar left for Devil’s Horde and is currently running all their raids full time.

Alena and I canceled our accounts altogether back then, but I’ve been playing a bit lately. Leveling a couple of alts (primary my hunter, who I find a lot of fun), and Alena have been helping me with different stuff.

A week ago I got back on my warrior, run a couple of instances and did some quests with Eldar to improve my tanking gear. However what got me most excited during the past week is the fact that it actually became possible to get an epic flying mount (280% speed increase) which costs 5,000 gold. I remember struggling at putting together 1,000 gold for our land epic mounts, and now this. Anyhow, the speed at which I was able to collect it was nothing short of amazing, first of all to myself. I started with 1,700 and was at 5,000 at the end of Saturday.

Money For Flying MountWhat I did was very simple: I farmed and farmed for adamantite ore which I proceeded to break up into gems (JC Prospecting). On average I think I was about to get at least 1 rare gem out of 4 tries, which would sell for 60 – 70 gold each. In addition to that Alena helped me farm fire and air primals, which would sell for 30 gold each. And then we used her alchemy transmutation abilities to create several Earthstorm Diamonds, which sold for over a 100 gold each, which very minimal investment. Jewel crafting prospecting was the main part of it though.

So now I’m a proud owner of a Swift Red Windrider. I thought that I was going to wait for the Netherdrake, but it became quite clear that the reputation grind is going to take quite a while, me being a protection warrior. I can’t kill anything at all. Granted, they can’t kill me either, but that doesn’t get me very far. I think I’m going respect Arms for this grind if I want to achieve anything. Fury, even though my favorite, is too gear dependent, and gear I don’t have. So Netherdrake is my next objective.

P.S. Today I finally got my Karazhan key, thanks to Eldar and his friends from Devil’s Horde.

WoW TCG Tournament

WoW TCG CardsThis is not something I’m really planning to do, and not something that I’ve signed up for, but it’s something that I’ve been thinking for some time about and it would be pretty cool if we could put it together one day. At least I think so.

I know that none of my friends have tried any game similar to this one before, but some of use got into it, and we enjoyed it for quite a bit. It started with me and Alena looking for a present for Maruk some time ago, and we got some cards for ourselves as well. Later on we showed it to Eldar, and he had his own set the next day. And recently I played a game with Lёnchik and he got a total kick out of it, and made us play with him every day since then, until he left for boot camp. Last time we saw him (a day before his birthday) we’ve got him several booster packs from the expansion set of the original game.

So if all 5 of us manage to get together somewhere at some point, I propose to play a small tournament with very simple rules that will go something like this:
  • everyone brings 6 unopened booster packs
  • all the booster packs go into some dark bag for a total of 30 booster packs
  • each player pull out 4 random packs
  • with the use of those pulled out packs player builds a 30 card deck (each booster pack has 15 cards)
  • each match is judged by the results of 3 games
  • first round everyone plays with all other players (4 matches for each player)
  • second round 4 player compete for 2 spots in the final
  • final round decides who wins the leftover 10 booster packs

From what I remember, the cost of 6 booster packs is going to be somewhere around $20. I think that’s something all of us can spare for a fun evening.

What do you think, guys?

More Wii Tonight

Spent a whole night playing Rayman on Wii today with a lot of friends. At one point Maruk started making videos with his phone. I don’t know why I didn’t think of that. The best one is of Ignat doing a dance. mrgreen

P.S. First video post of ours, so excuse the sound quality. You have to make it quite loud to actually hear the background sounds.

Wiiiiiiiii

Alena Playing WiiToday we had a lot of fun playing Eldar’s new toy – Nintendo Wii. I actually wanted to try it out after learning about it from different sources – magazines, personal blogs and of course our friends. In fact, Maruks bought it a couple of weeks ago and were inviting us over to play, but we haven’t had a chance to visit them yet.

I like the whole concept of this game console – characters in the game imitate your movements. Well, kind of. A player has to hold a very sensitive remote control in one hand, so hand movements are reflected pretty accurately; other parts of the body are involved too, but the intensity of the movements depends on a game. You don’t really have to run, or jump, or do other silly stuff in order to score high. Unless, of course, you can’t help it!

I couldn’t quite imagine what it was like to play using Wii’s remote control before I tried it. And like the majority of the people who played, I must confess that muscles in my right hand feel pretty sore ( o.O , who’s not working out?).

Looking at other people playing is fun too. The face expressions are sometimes hilarious! I don’t think that Wii is a valid substitute for a gym, but you certainly can burn some calories while enjoying this alternative gaming style.

Jewelcrafting & Mining

Fel Iron in Outlands (Hellfire Peninsula)I’m having a lot of fun leveling a new profession in the expansion. Before I never really got any use of any professions and never got it to any high level (blacksmithing), so I decided to drop it and go for Jewelcrafting. Wanted to do something that not only I would benefit from, but also my friends and guildies. I bought a lot of materials before the expansion came out and was able to get it to 300 on the first day.

After that was done we ventured into Outlands and started questing. With questing I was trying to mine, but there were no mines to be found. Too many people wanting the same thing made leveling further impossible. One of the guildies (Volltok) gave me a great tip about finding Fel Iron Ore. The portal into Outlands was the answer. The area around it has no mobs and is full of mines. Most people get there and leave right away by taking a flight. However I don’t know how long this will stay a secret, so if you need Fel Iron, try checking that area out.

I’m using Gatherer to make the note of all the nodes and then just ride in circles. You can usually get a lot of ore very quickly and skill up your mining as well. I’m at 375 now, by primarily hitting the nodes around that area.

The Jewelcrafting however is stuck at 345 at the moment. There is hard spot to get through. All the stone cutting recipes end on 325 and the next time you can get any useful skills are at 350. So I’m almost there, even though it’s taking me about 15 gems to get a single skill up. Either way, so far it’s been fun, doing something new.

Buring Crusade Has Started!

Up to My Ears in Burning CrusadeYesterday, my inner geekiness has suppressed whatever else “inners” I had. We went to a midnight release of Burning Crusade in Manhattan. Two out of 8 BestBuy stores doing a midnight release were located in Manhattan. We just went to the closest one. After waiting in line for about 15 minutes, we got inside the store, where we waited for another 15 minutes and got our games. Wasn’t bad at all.

We bought 3 Limited Edition versions and 1 regular edition. The limited ones will go to Eldar, Maruk and myself. Alena didn’t think we need to spend another $30 more in order to get a 2nd LE edition for us. So the adventure begins! Again. teeth

WoW UI Before “Burning Crusade”

WoW UILess then 7 hours is left until the official release of the first World of Warcraft expansion, Burning Crusade. We thought about going to a local store tonight (there are several in the area) for a midnight release, but it turns out you had to pre-order the game in order to get it tonight. Oh well, I guess we’ll just wait. o.O

Before all of my UI stops working (which it always does with something changing in WoW) I wanted to post a current screen shot, and a list of mods I used. I’m not going to include the links, since they often change, sites seem to stop working, and versions constantly change, but you should be able to find them by searching on some of the popular sites such as Curse Gaming.

Out of the visible add-ons you have the following: (1) ag UnitFrames, (2) Titan Bars, (3) CT Viewport, (4) Simple Combat Log, (5) Drathals HUD, (6) Scrolling Combat Text, (7) Squeenix, (8) CT BuffMod, (9) Trinity Bars, (10) OmniCC (cooldown timers). The ones that are not visible, but still are a MUST: StanceSets, Grid (more for healing / decursing classes), Clique (same as one before), EquipCompare, CT Raid Assist, FastQuest (about to become needed again in the expansion) and DamageMeters. I’m sure I have left something important out, but these make the playing experience quite a bit nicer.

Either way, I hope we won’t have to wait way too long to find 2 copies of expansion. Jewelcrafting, level 70 and several other things await us! teeth

Keep On Playing

Outlands PortalAfter the 2 years of WoW reign, it left a noticeable impact. The addiction of it is not so easy to break it seems. We still keep playing, even though we don’t spend nearly as many hours as we once did. However it might change once again in a near future (although I doubt very much that it’ll be again as it was in the peak of UGH raiding days). You see, there are about 6 more weeks left until the expansion comes out, and we’re definitely buying it.

Worc in OutlandsI somehow ended up with a beta invite, and I spent some time checking out what Blizzard has in store for us. From what I’ve seen it looks like we’ll have some fun leveling our characters again, together with Eldar (yes, Gnaw has been seen in the world of Azeroth lately). From what we all remember it was the best time for us. Running together, doing things on our free time, and not planning our lives around the raids. Exploring the Outlands should give us some more of that good, old gaming.

Tomorrow Blizzard is releasing the last pre-expansion patch, which will contain a lot of changes that were originally destined to come out with the expansion, like new (and much better) PvP system, new talents and so on. Even though you can not start gaining new levels just yet (limit will be raised from 60 to 70 in the expansion) there is new stuff to explore tomorrow. Beside all the old things, new Arena system (not available until expansion) seems like it could be a lot of fun. Too bad I suck at PvP though. teeth

Worc's Distant Cousin - WorcIn the mean time we tried playing Neverwinter Nights 2 with Eldar. Even though it seems like a good game, the missing MMO part makes it a totally different experience. I’m still not quite sure what makes World of Warcraft so addicting, but so far there is absolutely nothing out there, game-wise, that was able to take my attention away from it. o.O

World of Warcraft: Taking It Easy

Warcraft BathIt’s been a while since I’ve posted anything on the topic of World of Warcraft, so I wanted to take some time and do a major update on it here.

The thing is that we quit raiding on June 4th of this year. The stress just kept adding up, and I couldn’t take it anymore. Eldar probably was feeling something similar, although I do not remember now. UGH ceased to exist at that point, at least in the form that it was created.

In the past 2 days I’ve browsed through the multiple (mostly antique now) threads on UGH forums. The days when we had to fight to keep UGH alive and not let it die in its infancy, days of fighting to keep the rules fair for everybody, and then the last days when fighting was just not worth it anymore.

Interestingly enough all the people who caused the most grief are nowhere to be found these days and those who supported us on those steps are still around. UGH has been a long good ride along the way of which we got to meet and play with Thebob, Crawk, Volltok, Glonk and multiple others.

The UGH itself didn’t die at all. It still exists and flourishes today, but it took a different shape. Today it’s knows as a Dnevnoi Dozor raiding guild. Yes, it’s that small guild that we started back in 2005 (credit goes to Alena for the great guild name). Now its one of the biggest, well known guilds on the server.

As for us, we keep logging in from time to time to do several small quests, or help out on the raids where there are shortages of people, but our raiding days are long ago over, and are probably not coming back. Eldar didn’t login into WoW since June at all, but that’s because he’s just that much better at kicking addiction, as opposed to me. )

WoW TCG Is a Hit

Alena Going Through WoW TCG CardsToday we spent the most of the day interacting with WoW TCG (or looking where to get it).

Initially I called GameSpot on Kings Plaza to find out if they had any booster packs in stock. They said they did. Sadly, when we got there, we discovered that there are 3 GameSpot’s there and all 3 of them had everything sold out. Checked some stores on 86th, same deal. I did a search online and found some obscure store in Brooklyn China Town (58th Street and 8th Avenue) and they said they had some in stock. When we got there, they indeed had some in stock – a full unopened box (24 packs)! :!: And we bought the full box for $85 instead of a $100 that we’d end up paying in GameSpot or EB Games and such. Needless to say we were pretty happy. mrgreen

So we put aside the new box and decided to split the opened up (with 23 packs) between ourselves. Alena got 11 and I got 12. teeth We found 2 epics in ours, and I was pretty happy. Alena was upset that we didn’t get a legendary turtle.

Maruk called and said that he wanted to chill, but Alina was not feeling well, so he would be alone. I figured that I can’t really wait until tomorrow with his gift (yeah, if you didn’t guess yet, “one other person” in the previous post was him) for his birthday, and told him to come over.

He came over, we gave him the present, explained what it was and how it worked and he seemed to enjoy it as much as we did. Went through opening 24 packs, found 2 epics as well, one of which was Leeroy Jenkins.

We spent all evening playing matches and constructing decks. I don’t think I’ve ever had as much fun playing a non-computer game. We finished our last match about about 3:30am. o.O So technically Maruk left with his present on November 5th, his birthday.

P.S. It’s still hard to understand some aspects of the game, but a video from Gaming Report was extremely helpful.

World of Warcraft TCG

World of Warcraft Trading Card GameWith us trying several board games lately, I’ve run (so to speak) into another kind of popular non-computer gaming: trading card games. The reason it caught my attention this time around is because a World of Warcraft one was release, and I saw some information about it on WoW official site.

To make long story short I bought a couple of starter kits (for Alena, myself and one other person) and a bunch of booster cards for that other person. Now in the past 3 days I’ve been trying to read the rules book over and over again, trying to understand how it works.

The fact that I never played any games of this kind before makes it a bit complicated the first time around, so I asked a bunch of “noob” questions on one of the sites dedicated to the new game (WarcraftCCG.com). The members of the forum were kind enough to reply with a number of detailed responses. I figured I’ll post the short Q & A session that resulted here, to help other like myself.
Q: Rule book says that the deck should have at least 60 cards. Yet they say that originally we should not mix the pre-set hero deck with anything. I’m assuming it means that we should try to play with 30 card deck originally to make the game simpler to understand? Basically don’t pay attention to 60 card rule while you’re learning? Or did I misunderstand it?
A: Correct, that is just basically so you understand the basics. The starter deck contents are made to be playable out of the box. As such it will be easier to learn with them remaining unmodified.

Q: Resources is the way to pay for the use of other cards. Is the idea that I should select the most useless cards in my hand to put down as resources, since they will be used as currency and nothing else?
A: Yes, either that or quests. Quests are made to go into the resource row to be useful. If you have a quest in your hand always put it in the resource row, but if you don’t just pick your most useless card.

Q: Pay for actions: if the card that I want to use costs 3 resources does that mean that I have to exhaust the card that also costs 3 in my resource area, or does it mean that I have to exhaust 3 cards, and the values on resource cards have no meaning? I’m thinking it’s the latter, but having seen cards that have a cost of 9 makes me wonder if I’m right.
A: Any card in your resource area, except quests, are placed face down. Each one, including quests, counts for 1 resource. Once a non-quest card is in your resource area it’s values have no meaning anymore. So if my ability costs 4, I need to exhaust 4.

Q: Double use of cards: I’ll use weapon as an example. I saw cards that have 2 uses for them. Basically the primary use as a weapon, and then some special ability. How are those used? I can pick either one, but not both, correct? For example, if I strike with a weapon, the card becomes exhausted. So at this point I would not be able to use the special ability, correct? And vice verse, if I used some special ability, I can not use the weapon to strike with?
A: You are partially correct here. To Strike with a weapon the weapon must be ready (not exhausted). If a weapon has a special ability the weapon doesn’t necessary have to be ready to use that special ability. You can use any weapons special ability if it is exhausted as long as the ability doesn’t require you to exhaust the weapon. For example the Headmasters Charge is a staff that can be used to strike with and use its special ability. It doesn’t have to exhaust to use the special ability so this is okay. But if the special ability require you to exhaust the weapon than you must choose either to strike with it or use the special ability.

Q: If I’m totally confused with the above and I’m misunderstanding it: maybe striking with a weapon doesn’t make the card exhausted? If that’s the case I can use it as many times as I can pay for the use? Can I still strike with it after I used the special ability of the card and it has become exhausted?
A: Strike with a weapon requires you to exhaust it so you can only do that once. Now what matters is what the special ability requires you do to pay its cost. If the special ability on the weapon requires you to exhaust your hero or the weapon then you with have to choose to strike with the weapon or use the ability.

Q: Sometimes special abilities seem to have cost and sometimes they do not. Does it mean that if there is no number in a circle in the power (special ability) box, then I can just exhaust the card and use it without paying? I only pay for the time when I place the card itself in the play area?
A: If the card has no number in the circle, then it has no resource cost to use it. However, you only exhaust the cards to use their game text when that card specifically tells you to.

Q: Hero special powers. Can I use Hero’s special power once per game, or once per turn? In other words if I use the hero power and flip the card, does it get reset at the start of the next round, or no?
A: Once per game, currently once a Hero is flipped there is no way to reset them. If you flip your hero it stays face-down until the end of the game.

Q: If you have more then 7 cards in your hand at then end of the turn you must discard cards until you have 7. Do I pick which ones to discard? Also where do they go? Back into the deck? Graveyard? Out of the game stack?
A: You choose, and they go to the discard.

Q: Getting cards ready: do players get their cards back into the ready state at the beginning of every turn or only at the beginning of their own turn? So for example if Hero used a weapon to attack once it gets exhausted. Then the other player attacks that hero in his/her turn, is the weapon still exhausted (to strike back) or was it reset back to ready?
A: Only at the beginning of their own turn. So if you want to strike back with a hero you can’t use his weapon on your turn.

Q: In the action phase there is one step where players can place a resource. Can that resource be placed as the first step of actions phase and then be used for costs, or it HAS to happen only after the Play Cards and Use Powers steps? If so, can it be still used as means of payment for the upcoming attacks?
A: You can do anything in the action phase in any order. So you can play an ally, play a resource, attack with an ally, play an ability, play another ally, attack with another ally, etc.
We are going to try to have our first match tonight, after work and see if we get the rules and if the game is a fun one to play.

Fire Island

Fire Island LighthouseThe weekend wasn’t over yesterday. Since we didn’t take any pictures yesterday, we decided to go back to Fire Island. One object of interest is a very old lighthouse located on it.

The first lighthouse on Fire Island was built back in 1826 and it was 74 feet tall. However it was deemed too short and was taken apart. The material was reused to build a new one, and it was completed in 1958 and stood 168 tall. That lighthouse is still standing there to this day. It was brought out of operation in 1974, but it was brought back to life somewhere in the beginning of 80′s as a historic monument.

Boardwalk Through DunesThe road to the lighthouse is interesting on its own as well. First of all it’s a road built of wood, which rises slightly above the ground. And it passes through dunes filled with beautiful flora and multitude of animals. We saw a couple of white-tailed deers on our way. One portion of it was surrounded by bushes of wild raspberries.

All in all we had fun walking through the park and taking pictures of the surroundings and the lighthouse. And it looks like we didn’t really get any sunburn this time around, which is always good.

On a different note, yesterday, instead of going to the movies we ended up playing a board game bought by Eldar. It’s called Puerto Rico, and was unexpectedly fun. Monopoly is nothing compared to this one. We liked it so much yesterday that we played yet another round today. Fun!

Worc’s Big Day

WorcWorc had a very big day yesterday. He has finally received his Might shoulders. It’s been a long time.

It all started when we were raiding with Unforeseen Vengeance back in September of 2005. Molten Core was just too much for us at that point, and we have left the guild after winning 2 sets of shoulders – one for Zhah and one for Alona (our shaman and mage). At that point we figured that we’ll never get back in MC, and there is nothing more to do for our pair of 60s. So we made alts. I made a warrior – Worc and Alena made a pries – Vesna.

I remember walking around Orgrimmar being very envious of the lucky ones who were able to wear Pauldrons of Might. I was saying to myself, it’s OK, I’ll get myself a Valor set, and I’ll be happy with that.

Little did I know that starting from January we’d end up not only raiding MC again, but we’d end up leading the whole thing. It’s been over 5 months since our first UGH raid, and yesterday I finally have won the last visible piece of the Might set – the one I wanted the most – the shoulders!

All cheer for mighty Worc!
