Linode VPS

LinodeAfter over 10 years of having a dedicated server in one data center or another and paying the bill I decided to put those days behind me. And no, I’m not going to give up having an access to a Linux box on a high speed connection, nor am I planning giving up my root access to such a machine.

We’re simply moving to virtual hosting. Hosting has evolved considerably in the past several years and VPS business has matured to a point where it is a perfect solution for somebody like me. All the same benefits as having a dedicated server without the cost. My monthly bill is going to go down from $130 to $40. And that considering that $130 just came down to that number from $170 only a couple of months ago.

I looked at several providers. The top choices were Slicehost, VPS.NET and Linode. After a lot of research and consideration I decided to go with Linode. They are still a small company1, the prices are better and they do accept AMEX2, which is my card of preference. The reviews are good and they have a data center in NJ, not that it matters much, but still a nice plus.

I was also pleasantly surprised by an immediate availability of a very fresh Ubuntu 10.04 “Long Term Support” edition, my OS of choice. The server3 came up within minutes of me signing up and the actual migration of all my sites took much less than I expected. So if you’re reading this, you are on the new server already.

So far so good. We’ll see how things go in the future. If you do decide to try Linode out as well I would appreciate it if you would use my referral code, which is fd37b79f19b48bc235d9eb3e6d921a0717fa7c28.

  1. Slicehost has been bought out by RackSpace. []
  2. VPS.NET does not for some reason. []
  3. I decided to start with Linode 720. []
