Чучля Weight

Chuchlya WeightI’ve been keeping a record of Shublik’s weight progress since his arrival at our house. I really just wanted to use an iPhone application called WeightBot, but since my weight stays constant it wasn’t fun.

So here we have the results for the first year. He went from 3 pounds at the end of March to 9 pounds at the end of December, thus tripling his size in these 9 months. We think he’s about done growing by now, but who knows?

Presidents Day Weekend

With a Presidents Day coming up we booked ourselves a little trip for the long weekend. This time around we’re going to drive south of New York and visit our local states and their capitals.

We will make Annapolis our base of operation1. Annapolis itself is a capital of Maryland. I’ve seen the name many times on the road signs, but have never visited the city itself.

One of our objectives will be visiting the capital of our nation — Washington, DC. The reason is to collect all the capital’s National Parks stamps. The city has a ton of monuments and memorials and each one has a stamp. For all the time that I’ve been there we’ve never visited after we started collecting those stamps.

On our way back we’ll stop by Dover, which is a capital of Delaware. I’m pretty sure I’ve been to Dover before, but I never realized that it was a capital and therefore I’ve never seen the capitol building.

Update: Trip had to be canceled due to massive snowfall that buried our destination in snow.

  1. Doubletree Hotel Annapolis, 3 nights, king size bed room. 30,000 hhonor points for the first night, and $89.10 per night for the other 2 nights. Plus a room upgrade and free breakfast as our Diamond VIP benefit. []

Continue Reading

Our Little Secret

Our future child. Sonogram taken at the end of the 12th week. The image above should be enough to guess what is going on. If it’s still not clear — we’re going to be parents! mrgreen It sounds really weird, I know, and we both find it hard to believe just yet.

On the other hand we were planning it for a while now, and everything worked out almost as planned. During the Spring of 2009 we made a decision. We went to see a doctor to make sure everything is OK and Alena stopped taking birth-control pills and started taking vitamins.

First ever picture.Even though doctors said that there is no need to wait, we decided to make sure birth-control clears out of the system and waited 3 more month, before actually trying. Plus Alena has a list of signs that are preferable. ) First month was October (with due date to be in mid-July). At the end of the month she had a week delay, and we thought that we’re there. But she had her period after all and we were very disappointed. Continue Reading

Snow 2010

Snow. And here is our mandatory snow storm photo. The storm is not nearly as bad as everyone predicted it would be, but I like the change of scenery. Not more than twice a year though, please.

I’m working from home and everyone from office is too. Alena’s working from home as well. My mom is working from home. Shublik is definitely working from home. I think the schools are closed today also.

Snow Digging

Buried in ice.Not all is good about the snow. On Thursday I had to drive to work and naturally the car was buried in hard ice. The just run huge trucks down the strips with massive snow plows and all the snow ends up on the cars. Then everything freezes over through out the night and in the morning you have a fun exercise.

Solid ice.It took me over an hour to get all the ice out of the way. It was frozen solid and luckily I was able to borrow a real sharp metal shovel to get the job done. A regular snow shovel would do nothing.

Nikon D700

Nikon D700.Well, I finally bit the bullet and pulled the trigger on D7001. Sounds painful, I know. But I’m happy that it finally happened. I’ve been saving up2 and waiting for this since the end of August.

Nikon D700.I’ve done a LOT of reading and was convinced that my old trusty D70 was needed to be replaced and that Nikon D700 was my dream camera. There are multiple raving reviews all over the net. The camera has an amazing ISO performance and one of the best AF systems. A lot of that is contributed to by it’s full frame sensor3.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED lens. There are multiple other distinctions which are covered in numerous reviews, so I’m not going to go through the list. ISO and 51 AF points (as opposed to 5) were among the main reasons for me.

Sample D700 shot, fresh from the camera.Initially I decided to wait for the next iteration of the camera. And then several weeks ago I saw a whole different perspective on the issue. The price has came down from $3,000 to $2,399. I think its safe to assume that the new one will be introduced at the same price point. Is there any new future that I would pay $600 more for? I can’t think of anything.

Sample D700 shot. 100% crop. Sharpness.Video? Nice, but it would be 1 week of play for me and never would be used again. A second CF slot? Again, nice, but not $600 nice. Improved sensor from D3s? Again, nice, but not $600 nice. And resolution bump for sacrificed ISO performance? Would be a downer for me. I was happy with 6 mega-pixels, I sure will be happy with 12.

Sample shot. 100% crop. Noise levels at ISO 1600.Either way the upgrade for me is huge and most of it is positive. The only negative is that the new combo is noticeably heavier and bigger then the old setup, but I’m more than happy to live with this trade off for all the benefits.

Color sample.I also did buy a new “main” lens. The jump from DX to FX have rendered a pair of my lenses somewhat useless. Beside that my D70 kit lens was never anything to write home about. The new lens is one of the top Nikon lenses — Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED. According to reviews the lens is extremely sharp in all of its extremes and has very little distortion of any kind. After all, the body is going to only perform as nice as the glass attached to it.

In short, I’m very happy and very excited. Have a lot of learn about the new body, get rid of some of the habits that formed over the years with D70 and then have fun.

  1. Ordered from B&H on Friday night, delivered on Tuesday morning. []
  2. Thanks to my great friends and family for their contribution. []
  3. D700 has FX sensor, D70 has DX sensor. FX is the equivalent of 35mm film sensor. DX is significantly smaller. []
