Computer Saga

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB DDR3 1600 RAM.As you might remember I ordered a new computer from Dell on December 10th, 2009. And as some of you might know, I have yet to get anything. Dell is at its lowest as far as I can remember. My ordered has been delayed 5 times. I have multiple conversations with rude customer support people who barely speak any English and who you have to stay on hold for for 30 minutes to get to. They provide no information claiming that my computer is about to ship, only for me to get an email saying that my order has been delayed yet again.

Western Digital RE3 1TB, 7200 RPM, 32MB cache, SATA 3.0Gb/s internal hard drive.I would’ve canceled long ago, but my order was not an emergency and none of the competitors could beat the price point. But waiting forever and being treated poorly by customer support — I just couldn’t take that anymore.

There was only one other place that could beat the price — Dell’s own outlet — refurbished computers. I put together a small script that would check the outlet and ping my phone ones a good match was made, at a price point that I was happy with. And that’s exactly what happened.

I canceled my first order and placed another one through the outlet. The computer is pretty much the same with a couple of differences. First one had 8GB of 1066mHz RAM and 1TB HD. It also included a monitor that I had absolutely no need for at a price point of $1200. The one has 3GB of same RAM, 500GB HD and ran me $709. Same very night I placed another order on New Egg for 8GB of RAM1 running at 1600mHz, and a brand new 1TB HD2 that has better specs than my original order had. The total for the system is going to be somewhere around $1050.

Now New Egg parts I already have in my hands and that’s with free shipping. But Dell is a whole other story. Today I was awaken by a call shortly after 8am — “This is Dell!”, the voice said. “Oh, fuck”, though I to myself. The voice proceeded to tell me that the item on my order was back-ordered and so it will be delayed. Say, what? An outlet system that they had in hand is back-ordered? What the hell does it even mean?

I logged onto my account at Dell only to see that my order is in fact marked shipped and has a tracking number attached to it. Tracking number says that the item is at Fedex and is in transit. The scheduled delivery is on the 18th. Dell sent me an email too an hour later saying that my order has shipped. A company from hell. Now I only have to wonder what it is that they shipped and if it’s going to be in a working order, or I’m still stuck in this nightmare.

I don’t think I’ll be ordering anything from them anytime soon. Sorry for the long rant, but I had to vent.
