Touring Manhattan

Ignat and VikaYesterday we picked up Igat’s wife Vika from the airport. This is not only her first trip to NYC, but it also is her first trip outside of ex-USSR space. I knew Vika since I was about 10 years old, but then we haven’t seen each other since we left Uzbekistan back in 1995. However we’ve been hanging out with Ignat since his arrival to New York and he turned out to be a very cool guy and a good friend.

On Top of Empire State BuildingToday we were showing Vika the best parts of our city. First we checked out our local Brooklyn shore and then we took a train to Manhattan. We started it off with a walk down the 34th Street and ended up on the very top of Empire State Building. This time the line was not more then 30 minutes (as opposed to at least 3 hours).

Beering Up at a BreweryAfter that we walked up to 42nd Street and had a nice dinner and beer tasting at a local brewery. By the time we were done with dinner it was dark outside – the best time to visit Times Square, which we did. Then we spent some time in the biggest Toys “Я” Us, after which everyone was pretty tired, so we decided to go home.

All in all it turned out a fun day with good friends.

Lёnchik is Back

Lenchik MarineWe spent a whole evening yesterday talking to Lenchik. He’s done with a boot camp, and is a full fledged Marine now. We had a million of questions for him, and he had 2 million stories to tell. Needless to say we only got through a small portion of them.

In general he seems to like the whole military thing a lot. I think he’s got all the qualities to go very far there. All the commanding officers knew him well in the camp, and his fellow recruits voted him the best recruit.

One of the cool stories he told me was the one about his last day. After graduation he was standing around, waiting for someone. He sees 2 officers going by, so he greeted them. One run up to him and started talking to him. Only in a short while Lenchik realized that the guy had “only” a rank of General. Continue Reading

Fixing Stuck “Hold” Switch on iPod

4th Generation iPod PhotoI use my 4th Generation iPod for only one purpose — bringing music easily into my car to listen to while I’m commuting to work. I have an Alpine head unit and an iPod adapter which lets me hook the iPod up and control it via the controls located on the head unit itself. Sound gets fed into the head unit through the same adapter connection.

Several days ago I was getting out of my car with my iPod in hand and I guess I wasn’t paying enough attention to it safety. It jumped out, slammed on the ground with all it’s got jumped up several more times performing triple flips and such until it finally came to rest. If my iPod would be a gymnast on a competition it would’ve scored the maximum grades right there. Continue Reading

Downtown Manhattan

17 State Street and East Coast Memorial in Battery ParkThis Sunday we made plans to get a ride to the Statue of Liberty, but it was not meant to be. First of all Lenchik was late which delayed us by an hour or so. Then we missed our subway stop and had to walk all the way from Grand Street. When we got there all the tickets were sold out anyway. And to top it all off my battery on the camera died in the middle of the day because I forgot to recharge it.

Manhattan SkyAll of that, however, didn’t make the trip less interesting. I was experimenting with my new ND gradation filter that Eldar got me for my birthday, and came up with a lot of great shots. I took some shots without the filter for comparison and the sky was completely washed out (white) as opposed to the rich color and shapes with the filter. Continue Reading

Tribute in Light

9.11 Tribute in LightAs I mentioned earlier, today is the 6th anniversary of the day when the world was changed. Every year on September 11th two beams of light can be seen from any point in the city going high into the sky. This year we took Ignat and Vika and went to Brooklyn Heights Promenade.

Tribute in Light from West Side HighwayThere were a lot of people there with all kinds of video and photo equipment. It was funny to see how many people were trying to use their cell phones to take some shots. We took about 50 from 2 different positions. The picture on top, taken from Brooklyn Heights Promenade, came out the best. The second photo was taken from West Side Highway, next to the building where the lights were installed.

It happened so that this date matches with the anniversary of me getting my U.S. citizenship. I’m proud to be an American.

Caponata

CaponataI want to recommend one recipe, which I tried out on Danya’s Birthday. I found it in Saveur, one of the magazines that we subscribed to.
Caponata
(Sicilian Sweet-Sour Vegetables)
SERVES 6

This recipe is an adaptation of one in Cucina del Sole: A Celebration of Southern Italian Cooking by Nancy Harmon Jenkins (Morrow, 2007). Continue Reading

Meat “Sushi”

Meat "Sushi"Кто собственно о чём, а я снова о готовке. Хочу поделиться идеей для вечера, когда долго стоять на кухне нет сил, а кушать всё же хоцца. Данька это “блюдо” называет мясными суши. O.o

The Statue Of Liberty

Мне кажется, он был из Ямайки, но голову на отсечение не дам. mrgreen Он спросил Даню — “Hey, where are you guys all from?”, на что мой муж честно ответил “Brooklyn”, а потом, видно сжалившись над музыкантом, добавил “and before that — from Russia”.

5. Continue Reading

Weekend Getaway

We’ve planned another little mini-vacation for ourselves. Going to repeat one of our earlier trips — Atlantic City and Washington, DC. It’s one of the best routes that we can take on a car and should be very interesting to those who haven’t been to those places yet. This time it’s Vika and Ignat.

We’re taking off on early Thursday morning and going to Atlantic City first. We tried to add a little variation to the trip, so we’re going to be staying at Showboat, instead of Tropicana. In DC however we’re going to stay at the same hotel as last time. It’s hard to beat that location and a pool that’s open until midnight.

On Saturday evening we should be back in NYC. Sunday is designated as “Alena does her homework” day. As 18 credits in a semester is not an easy thing to pull off while maintaining 3.9 average.

Atlantic City and Washington

Lincoln MemorialOur short trip to Atlantic City and Washington has already come to an end, but I think it was a fun one. First of all it was really great to hang out with Ignat and Vika and to play a role of a tour guide (albeit not a great one).

Atlantic City Boardwalk near Taj MahalFirst day was Atlantic City day. We got there rather early only to find out that the pools are open on the weekends only. So we had a long day with not much stuff to do. We gambled a bit by playing on the slot machines of different kinds and then played some more on the “Wheel of Misfortune”. Luck was not really working in our favor (does it ever in casinos?), so we didn’t gamble too much. Continue Reading

Photo Board

Cork Bulletin Board with Photos of FriendsWe made another small addition to our apartment — our office actually. We bought a bulletin board made out of cork and a bunch of push pins at Staples.

Alena picked out a bunch of pictures of all our friends, we ordered the prints from SnapFish.com and pinned them all to the board. The end results looks cool and funky, especially for an office.

Somehow we left out one friend from all this mess by accident, but we will remedy this problem with next set of prints we order! We promise!
