Fog, Car and Plataforma

PlatformIt’s been rainy in New York last week. On Thursday we had quite a thunderstorm – had to close all the windows because of the heavy rain and lightning. Spooky sensation.

It’s often foggy during early and late hours because of the humidity. I like it when streets are covered in milky haze and vision is substantially limited (maybe it’s just because all my life I used to walk around with pretty poor eyesight without wearing any glasses or contacts, unless it was really necessary). I think bridges look very enigmatic in the mist hovering in the air. And for some unknown reason I love the sound that ships make when it’s foggy to warn other ships about their existence (not sure what’s the English expression for it), it makes me feel cosy.

On a different topic, some bastards broke into our car, while it was standing in the garage on Friday. Second time already. Daniel got paged by the alarm system and ran down as soon as possible, he even saw the guys who did it, but could do nothing. Nothing was stolen, they just didn’t have enough time, but they cut the wires that connect the accumulator in order to quiet down the alarm, so the car had to be repaired. Yesterday Daniel barely managed to start the car (he used boost cables to temporary connect the battery). Eh, this thing bothers us a lot. There is no guaranty that this will not happen again, and the management just doesn’t do anything to improve the level of security. It’s safer to park on the street than in the freaking payed garage. ( I wish it was easy to find parking around our apartment building.

Yesterday we went to a very fancy place for dinner. Brazilian restaurant Churrascaria Plataforma. Actually, my acquaintance with Brazilian style restaurants started with it more then 3 years ago (I think this particular place was recommended to Daniel by James). It’s all you can eat deal, but the way food is served is different from regular buffet or all-you-can-eat order in Japanese restaurant. Special staff carries variety of meat around on metal sticks. And if anybody desires slices of delicious beef, pork, lamb, you name it stakes, they will cut it off for you. To my great joy there was also a salad/seefood buffet in Churrascaria Plataforma, which had the delicious salads and mmmmmm (at this point I’m closing my eyes ecstatically) the best quality raw tuna. One more thing that delighted my senses was a life band. They played something jazzy, that IMHO helps digestion. )

I went to nail salon for pedicure-manicure yesterday, still happy about it (usually do it myself, but it’s never as good as when done by professionals). Daniel brought me flowers last Wednesday – that made me feel even more loved. ) We started watching “Babylon- 5″ and so far I really like it (it’s a science fiction television series, created by J. Michael Straczynski).

Nothing Is Cheap

Alena's CoursesTrying to get some papers translated from Russian into English. The prices are just crazy!!! I never thought it would be that much (in one of the agencies the price was quoted as 30 cents per word, which is about $100 per page. I need 12 pages to be translated  ( ). Eh, I wish I could translate it myself and then get them checked for accuracy and pay less. )  I need those papers for college (descriptions of some of the courses that I took in Belarusian State Economical University), so the translation should be made by licenced agency.

Daniel wants new Palm Treo 700p. ) It’s so funny how he can get fascinated with a new piece of technology. I totally don’t care, still happy with the one that he got me for my birthday couple of years ago – Clie by Sony. I use it every day – mostly as a dictionary. He installed Russian-English and English-Russian dictionary in it and I find it VERY useful. Much easier and faster to look up words in it, then in the old-fashioned paper version. I also use it as alarm clock, so every work day morning starts with little sweet and awfully annoying tune (Danya says that he likes it though, because it associates with me).

I wanted to brag here about a salad, that I made on Saturday for Daniel’s parents little party. They invited a couple of Daniel’s mom coworkers and she served a delicious dinner, which included her specialty – Funchoza. That’s spicy Korean meal made from starch noodles, meat and vegetables. I love it!! Her mother (Daniel’s grandmother Liza) taught her how to cook it. Well, anyway, back to my salad (even though it wasn’t nearly as good as funchoza). I was asked to make seaweed salad and something light and fruity. Well, I gladly took the responsibility, but wanted to make something new. So after couple of days of browsing through different cooking forums the idea of this salad formed in my head.

SaladSpinach, blackberries, blueberries, peaches, pears, pumpkin seeds, rokfor cheese (kind of blue mould cheese).

Dressing: honey, balsamic vinegar, rice vinegar, curry powder, freshly cracked black pepper and pinch of salt.

Well, it didn’t meet my pretty high expectations, but definitely looked interesting. ) I think it will be a good idea to mix this dressing with peaches and pears when I’m in the mood for something tangy.

Casual Thoughts

Lake GravelSometimes when I think about my place in life, about how I ended up in a certain position, I ask myself a question – do I control the flow of the events, or I am but a sliver in the stream. I guess everybody wonders now and then how one influences his own life. I don’t have the right answer, only things I can do are to try and to hope. Try to do what I can, hope that it will mean something. Choices… We analyse available information, we try to predict the future and make the best one. The thing is that there are so many unknown factors, that decision which seems good at this point could do harm in the future. But the options are limited. Do nothing is not a solution. We are swimming in the river of our fears and hopes, regrets and dreams trying to make sense out of it. Is there any? I very much hope so.

Happily Ever After

I’ve been thinking about making a post for quite some time now, about Palms, Treos and other PDA stuff, but currently there more important things on my mind that I want to write about.

It’s a bit early for congratulations, but it looks like there is nothing more in the way of us getting married! There is still a small formality that needs to happen, but it is only a formality, and nothing else. Needless to say, all this makes me quite happy. We’ve been waiting for this for a long time now!

We’ve been engaged since October 15th, 2004. We decided long ago that we would want to get married during the summer. It’s actually quite fun to be able to pick a date which you will celebrate through the rest of your life. So we had several dates in mind:

  • June 6th, 2006. June 6th is exactly half an anniversary of our first date, which we had on December 6th. June 6th, 2006 is 6/6/6, which is a fun number, but Alena says that it is way to evil looking for a marriage date. Either way, we missed the date. Actually we thought that there is no way anything can happen in time for this summer.

  • July 7th, 2007. Nothing special about this date except for the fact that it is 7/7/7. 7 is considered to be a lucky number, and 3 of them is even better.

  • August 20th, 2006. Now there is chance that we might be able to actually get married this summer. August 20th is the date of my parents’ marriage. They got married on that date back in 1977, which makes it 29 years this year, and 30 years next year.

So if everything goes well, we’ll try to do it on August 20th, this year, 2006. Now that’s where my head starts spinning. There is so much to think about. Where do want to do it, how do we want to do it, who do we want to invite, will they be able to come and so on and so on.

August 20th falls on Sunday this year, and from what I understand, civil marriage offices are closed on Saturdays and Sundays in NYC.

Also before you can get married you need to get a marriage license. In NY it is valid for 60 days. We would like to try to invite Alena’s sister to come join us for this celebration, and it would be a good idea to include the copy of the license. I figure there are more chances that she’ll be able to get a visa this way, but there is not much time left, and we know how bureaucratic things are.

We were thinking of renting out some restaurant maybe (a very small one at that), but we don’t know of any good places that we would like to rent out.

So I got to thinking, maybe Las Vegas isn’t such a bad place to get married after all, even though we were joking about it before. Flamingo has some really nice places for those ceremonies. They actually have 6! And we could have our little honey moon there too, since I will not be able to take a full week off in August.

Then the question is will other people be able to fly out and take a day or two off as well? We would certainly want to invite Eldar’s family from Colorado.

I have chosen Eldar to by my best man for the wedding. He’s been a great friend for many years to both myself, and Alena, so I’m really glad to have him to help me out with all this.

Anyhow, I guess that gives you a good picture of why my head is spinning. But I think collectively we can stop the spinning process and resolve all this.

“And they lived happily ever after!”

Best Woman

Diamond RingToday I asked Vicky to be my “best woman” aka “maid of honour”. To my joy, she agreed!! I’m so glad. I didn’t know whom to ask- my old time friends are far away from here and I don’t really have a close girl friend. I think Danya’s mom is the closest one to that definition. But Vicky is great for the role. I will be really happy to have her by my side at such an important and exciting moment in my life.

After talking to her today I think I’m drifting into the “wedding rush” phenomenon. Was looking though some wedding dress sites today. Don’t want the traditional ivory white one. Not sure what I do want exactly, but one thing I realized- Vicky will help me to make a selection. Going to be a perfect wedding dress, I have a full confidence in us!! )

Danya invited Moisha today, he said that he will come. Would be great, if Eldar’s family could come. Oooo, my head is spinning in perfect unison with Danya’s.

On the other note. I’ve registered for classes for the fall semester. Don’t have a perfect schedule, but at least I was able to get into all the desired ones. Had a hard time registering for communications, but -tfu-tfu- grabbed the available seat after it appeared (was checking availability couple of times a day until this one showed up). So I’ve registered for Writing (English), Communications (English) , Music, Psychology, Political Science. Have to take them all, which is very sad, but inevitable. Even though some of the credits were transferred, there is no way around Music or Psychology. ( Oh well, I’m happy that I’m going back to college, this is really important for me. And I’m scared. And eager to study. )
